there should be more m/f that's not geared towards guys but towards women because i fucking hate how people complain about how m/f is 'everywhere' yet it's all shitty male power fantasy 99% of the time.

i want more m/f romance that is more about the lady getting the dude than the dude chasing after the lady.

so... chick flicks

yeah they suck and we deserve better content, because "meh it's a chick flick" is a big excuse going around that produces all the shit that it does... but saying they're 1%, anon? seriously?

unless you aren't talking about fiction in general and you meant in action/fantasy/scifi canons.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-04 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
It genuinely pisses me off that so many people have internalized misogyny enough to forget about chick flicks. Most chick flicks pass the bechdel test without trying. Yes, they're largely ignored by mainstream film press, but that's because mainstream film critics are largely men who ignore chick flicks because they're geared towards women.

Dismissing the entire genre as objectively bad because the film canon has ignored them is perpetuating something damaging.

chick flicks aren't taken seriously because 90% of them suck. i saw this argument in rpa already so please don't bring it over here. is media for women looked down upon? yes, absolutely, but there are also genuine reasons to hate on shit like mamma mia and 50 shades. op is an idiot for going to the other extreme and pretending they don't exist, but let's not bring ~critics and film canon~ into this

also the bechdel test is garbage. two women talking about shoes and make-up for three minutes in a 90 minutes film about men pass it.

I don't go to rpa so I'm not sure what's gone on there, but I'm sorry that chick flicks have harmed you and your life. The Joy Luck Club is unironically my favorite movie and First Wives' Club is what made me question Disneyesque happy endings in the first place. I'd actually deleted that from my last comment before posting because I didn't want to be immediately dismissed for providing no references past the Sandra Bullock era of films.

Agreed about the bechdel test being garbage, but I was under the impression that we were arguing the same point.

idk how you thought we were arguing the same point when my second sentence literally starts with "yes they suck"

chick flicks haven't hurt me. i'm just establishing facts. there are some nice ones for sure, but let's not act like the genre didn't earn the reputation it has. for each good one there are fifteen that suck.

what is going on rpa is that there is an anon (maybe more idk) that thinks people hate twilight and 50 shades because they are for women and about women exploring their sexuality, and not because they deserve it simply on the grounds that they are garbage

"for each good one there are fifteen that suck."

Isn't that just movies in general?

Mrr. The Bechdel test is *supposed* to be garbage. The point is that it's a pitiably low bar and most media fails it.

are murry-purry furries allowed on wankgate?

i do mean fiction in general, especially action/fantasy/scifi since they're the type of fiction that i like to consume

not saying that chick flicks are bad, but they don't really appeal to the sense of action and romance that i want and it's kind of dumb to say that "chick flicks are what you're looking for anon" as if i've never watched one

they don't appeal to me at all tbh

(Anonymous) 2018-11-04 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
anon, let me introduce you to the wide wonderful world of shojo manga

(Anonymous) 2018-11-04 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
i love shoujo and josei

i just wish there was more fantasy shoujo isekai instead of shounen/seinen versions since that seems really interesting... but most of the scanlated isekai is mostly in the vein of 'i was summoned in a fantasy world full of big titty girls that want to ride my dick'

(Anonymous) 2018-11-04 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
...uh

romance has always been a genre geared towards women. do you think men are the target audience of harlequin novels?

you either smoke something really good, anon, or you're talking about something specific like the first anon said and you need to word things a little better

(Anonymous) 2018-11-04 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
yeah i probably should have worded it better but imo it says a lot that people immediately thought i was talking about m/f romance genre instead of m/f romance in general.

(also i've read harlequin novels, they're bad but entertaining.)

honestly i know people were bagging on adults reading YA fiction earlier here but the supernatural romance boom was one of the best ways to get a fix of supernatural/fantasy action mixed with a female-centered romance.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-04 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
it says a lot about... people reading exactly what you wrote?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-04 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
idk i feel that me asking 'hey i would like more m/f romances catered to women in stuff' and people going 'um there is the romance genre go there' is kind of missing the point.

for example it's always safe to assume that in every media series with a male lead there's going to be a designated female love interest, which will pretty much not be written for a female audience in mind. it's not the main focus or drive of the story, but it's there, and i'm saying in my fantasy/scifi/action series, i'd really love to see more stuff that would titillate a female fan in the romance department.

the fact i have to clarify it says a lot because people already default that because the romance genre is heavily geared towards women, there is no problem or issue here.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-04 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
but you didn't say "in stuff", you only said "m/f romance for women". and nobody said there is no issue. it doesn't say "a lot" it only says you suck at wording stuff. don't try to find a deeper meaning in something so simple like a silly mistake

I understood what you meant right away, I guess because I was also thinking about what people are actually likely to RP from and wine mom movies have never been big on dwrp.

The first thing I thought of was Hunger Games... Maybe Labyrinth if you stretch some parameters. I think there's also Jupiter Ascending but I don't know for sure if that has a love interest or no.

I don't think it helps if you're a huge weeb though because the isekai genre for dudes is just fucking massive and impervious to change. Same show every cours, produced 2 or 3 times by different studios and the only difference is the panty colour. It's such a slab of empty content that I'm not sure any women's genre compares, and I guess there's no aspiration to try and move into marketing to women when you're making money for old rope and you've got a lucrative and reliable deal going with good smile company on 1/8 titty figs.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-04 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
stop watching movies with male leads

(Anonymous) 2018-11-04 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
actually my interest in anything drops like a rock when i see that there's a male lead now. i'm just really tired of that and would rather spend my time looking for something that appeals to me.

i had a guy get really upset at me when he tried to tell me how awesome deus ex was to try to get me to play it and i told him i had no interest cause i was tired of always playing as a dude.
