and, again, swery himself admitted he fucked up. his attempts to fix things have not been great, but the creator himself sees that it was a bad idea, like

there's no hill to die on in this game defending the transphobic content when the creator himself is like "man, i didn't want it to come off this way, here lemme fix"

You guys were yelling about how bad the transphobia is and how it’s disappointing and then when we said York is a douche, which the actual fans have known since DP1, now you’re saying it’s all fine and Swery admitted his mistake and it’s good he’s trying to fix it

thing is, dp1 didn't follow up a game that's all about swery tactfully and thoughtfully addressing the impact of sexual assault on its victims. there is no The Missing for rape allegories.

"transphobia in the second game is okay because the first game had rape and people liked thaaaat" is a gross take. lots of people i know who did like the game thought the rape was unnecessary and uncomfortable.

dead naming is not as much of a thing or viewed differently in japan from what i understand. it’s not as taboo to refer to a trans person’s dead name if they’re referring to a time before they transitioned in the past from what i understand, but i’m not a expert and take it with a grain of salt because all my information is secondhand from the internet.

otoh i think this is definitely a problem of a game dev not fully realizing how problematic and offensive it comes across because of cultural differences. it’s like how everyone in america loved to throw around “gypsy” and romanticized the lifestyle, and it took decades of people pointing out that it’s a slur for a ethnic group of people that are still alive and heavily discriminated to this day. or how when people asked that omega verse stuff be referred to as a/b/o because without the slashes it’s a slur towards aboriginal people, and some people on this very community dug their heels in because they didn’t see why they needed to change their habits because they aren’t racist.

it’s not that big of a mystery of how that could have ended up in the game.

And Pacific Rim, a movie that came out in 2013 everyone loved deeply for years and some even claimed to be the best action film ever, used a slur. Prominently. Does that mean everyone involved hates the Romani people?

the missing also has some weird cultural issues of being a game set in america by a japanese dev. for example, the relationship between professors and students feels weird and unrealistic from a american point of view but it’s completely normal from a japanese standpoint.

you guys should try, like, traveling to other places in the world and experiencing culture outside of outrage-hounds on twitter. i'm not saying not to voice your opinion but try to have some perspective and understand it wasn't done maliciously because swery hates trans people or something.
