buddy i am not saying that playing HL is going to ~transfigure~ (see what i did there) an otherwise conscientious person (who for some reason is still playing HL, for the sake of this example) into being antisemitic but. perpetuating extraordinarily damaging stereotypes is in and of itself harmful.

also the comparison to the "violent video game makes you violent" canard is really disingenuous. a WAY better comparison would be to violent video games about Protecting Freedom by killing ~Muslim terrorists~ (whether thinly veiled or literal), which is MUCH closer to what we're discussing here. you follow?

the stereotype is not as widespread in the US/Canada as it is in the UK. you certainly run into it quick if you are involved in any activity where slurs are common, but, you know, quite a lot of people, even children, are not on xbox live. it is one of those little surprises you get late in life for some people.

and stereotypes do fade and become less culturally relevant if they aren't constantly propped up. when i first saw the dr. seuss anti-japanese cartoons, i was incredulous, i thought that nobody could mistake those for being japanese people? i couldnt even understand what the pictures were trying to show. i know we are not at that point with big nose greed goblins right now, but do you think we could ever get there?

even if they somehow lived without being exposed to any antisemitic bullshit, the stereotyping is a problem because ppl fill themselves up with all the bad shit about goblins, about how they're evil and shit, and then when they *are* exposed to the antisemitic bullshit they have all that baggage already

in both cases (hl and muslim murder fantasy games) the "secret sauce" is the cultural willingness to other and kill. neither of us want bigots in charge when they are likely to look for outsiders to kill. but to me, in this thread, your protests are limited just to the appearance of things which, if you are in the know already, are jewish stereotypes, in a harry potter video game.

therefore your position can look in a certain light like it boils down to "if someone has to die because of the harry potter video game, its not going to be someone jewish!"

my argument isnt that stereotype is somehow harmless but that its incoherent unless backed up by the willingness to other and kill. i think in your model of the world, theres nothing you can do about the willingness, so youre attacking the stereotype perpetuation. we're basically on the same team, its just that in my model of the world, its a waste of time to attack the stereotype perpetuation when i could be attacking the willingness. i think the kind of people radicalised into violent antisemitism by hp goblins are not people im gonna make decent by taking away the goblins. i work on fixing the willingness to other and kill part (thats where my career is going.)

because that's my model of the world, it makes me feel frustrated to see someone like you, clearly intelligent and ready to get your hands dirty fighting for what you believe in, "wasting your time." you probably see me as repulsively undermining and downplaying your real issues (at charitable best.) i dont think either of us is going to convince the other that their priority is the "superior" one, and it was a mistake (probably mine) to try. maybe we just gotta fight on our own fronts.

anon, you are absolutely right about the fundamental issue being a general willingness to attack the "other," which is baked broadly into the culture. I get being frustrated about the big picture being overlooked - I get angry about that a lot. however, what you yourself are overlooking is that stereotypes absolutely play a part in the general culture of othering (and thus being willing to commit violence against the "other"). just because something is a smaller scale part of the issue doesn't mean it shouldn't be called out when we see it.

additionally, this thread in particular comes across as you telling jews that if they feel hurt or unsafe because people they are directly connected to are blithely ignoring or accepting the stereotypes in hp are overreacting or focusing on the wrong thing. when just last week two men were shot for being jewish, and this week neonazis are openly protesting a broadway show about a jewish man who was lynched by the kkk saying the lynchers were right, you can see how this may strike a nerve with those of us who are jewish.
