You realize the characters are just in a medium right? They'd look like real people next to your character. If you can't imagine that how do you function in a writing hobby where you also have to imagine a bunch about the settings and things that happen in plots?

I get people being annoyed by seeing the art styles because they dislike them but being totally unable to use your imagination to picture characters in other mediums as real is weird in hobby where we already have to imagine a lot.

There aren't any pairings that I would never play, but there are a lot of pairings that I wouldn't play except in PSLs with someone I know well because I detest the widespread fanon takes on those pairings:

- enemy-to-lover ships where as enemies the characters have done actual heinous things to each other. I actually enjoy these, but they're so often played as "Oh, but I forgive you because TRUE LOVE." The ambiguity and conflict of reconciling the bad shit with the attraction is the whole point of an enemy-to-lover ship to me :/

- for similar reasons, stalker-stalkee ships. Whyyyyy do so many fandoms want to make these fluffy.

- ships that play into common porn tropes (teacher-student/boss-employee/large age difference/etc) because they almost universally attract people who like the trope better than the characters and will bend characterization to fit.

i actually really like the canon het pairing for my shounen protag and can confirm that finding someone who plays the other half well, is consistent, & doesn't flatten their dynamic has so far been both time consuming and impossible

i am usually the yaoihound that is always down with the popular mlm ship but the other half of one im not into tagged me and i was still like 'u know what maybe this will change my mind lets roll' and its been multiple threads and they still have not convinced me. im pretty sure they're working with the popular fanon of a shared backstory but canon made it very clear they'd never met before so it never goes far.

do you have this same problem with characters from written works, where you can only imagine your character attempting to communicate with a collection of sentient words?

my only issue is when i realize the LA player is pulling photos of the actor/actress from irl, like on the carpet or some other event. i don't know why but it breaks the line of character from actor for me and it makes me extremely uncomfortable to play against.

I play mainly LAs and same (well, maybe not uncomfortable but it's very distracting)

Especially when it's the same actor, okay fine, but they don't even look at all close to the same, different hair color or things like that.

block all icons from loading on dreamwidth and i guarantee you wouldn't be able to tell whether a character's medium is cartoony or not from the writing in the tag alone unless you were canon familiar
