Off topic but a comment down there reminded me, does anyone else feel like the players who ship with Tifa's characters get away with a lot more? Whether it's being flaky while holding a lot of important plot, or backseat modding. This has actually made me consider dropping more than the activity stuff.

thinking back i guess it really has fallen out of my "talking to people online" vocabulary, but it still feels surprising to see it lumped in the same category as unironically calling people ~~senpai~~ "sempai."
do people think it means "clinging to your leg like a child" rather than just being a shorthand for a "i am holding you close (i.e. hugging)" sentiment?
is this an "XD is cringe" thing?

For me it becomes cringe when it's in almost *every fucking response* of LWP's to any time someone is having a bad day.

can you like. elaborate on this. isn't NPCs being new characters (so: original characters) designed specifically for the game they're NPCs in… normal? and if they are plot-significant, it makes sense that they would have fleshed-out motivations and personalities.

or are you describing an issue where they are played just as actively as PCs, rather than being for special occasions and plot-significant moments? because normally i love getting cr with NPCs to the extent that "cr" is possible in that context—but if (based on other comments here about them replying to network posts) they are played as basically just elevated PCs, that would indeed be… well, weird at best.

it's when the npc is obviously the mod's blorbo to the point of being an oc in all but name that it becomes cringe

there actually is a really easy way to opt out of tagging a game's mod npcs

also lbr... a lot of us 90's gay/trans kids had a lot of internalized homophobia and yaoi/shounen-ai was exciting bc it was a safe way to explore/become familiar with queerness, as well as find community around it.

it probably did make it acceptable for it to appear in kid's media, though. rose/juleka would had torches and pitchforks outside disney's corporate offices just ten years ago.

anon, ten years ago was 2014. the Obergefell decision was 2015. two side characters being in a gay relationship would have indeed been a big deal, but "torches and pitchforks" is extremely hyperbolic. 2014 was korrasami walking off into the proverbial sunset, for a point of comparison.

currently we are seeing a major conservative backlash, which is a discussion that is a whole different can of worms.

When someone had a stressful work day, it's a nice offer. When someone's going through something big, it's very tonedeaf.
