apparently an actually unpopular opinion, but i think paying for icons is stupid. people expecting someone playing on a site like dw to be able to or to even want to fork over cash for pixels is mind boggling to me. i will either scour the internet for free icons or suck it up and crop my own. the idea that in the other thread someone like 'use picrew while you're waiting for your commissions', like that's just normal, is out there for me. i have never paid for icons other than purchasing a paid to use free icons. y'all have too much free flow cash and expect others to have the same.

sad fact, but the foodbanks are out of food here because they're overburdened, and what you can get from them doesn't last more than a day. my saving grace is that unlike most of the people in line in my city, i don't spend what little i have on smokes or drugs or booze.

so yes, i do have a food line to stand in, but it's not worth standing in when what i get is expired or useless. yes, foodbank, please give me plastic wrap and dish soap. that'll keep my belly full at night.

I pay for icons because I can afford to and because I want to reward the people who do the work with money for the time they spend making the icons for me. usually it's only like $5 or $10 it's not exactly breaking the bank.

but anon you could have been using those $10 to feed starving children in africa

I love being able to buy someone who gives me a little joy a little coffee or treat of equivalent value. It doesn't break the bank, it's a way to express my gratitude. I don't need to buy icons, I do it because I like to.

despite that, and despite this being a writing based hobby, a lot of people here do care about the appearance of those little 100x100 squares. plenty of us put in the time to source and crop or draw things ourselves to save money. some of us spend the money to save time. i'd argue the vast majority of us have done both at some point. it doesn't make either method better than the other. do whatever makes your heart soar in this hobby.

unpopular for a reason lol. it might be like ten cents per icon if it isn't hand drawn, not really breaking the bank here. i like paying people to make me pretty squares of my blorbos.

almost all icon makers also have free request posts where people can get 15 icons made for free, because there *isn't* an expectation that everyone has the money, you dingus. anything more than 15 means you're paying for an account anyway, so people getting batches of 100+ icons are compensating a community member's time and effort with a tiny fee.

the funniest part about this comment is that most people don't actually pay for icons. op is getting their tushy in a twist over nothing

someone on my list is requesting for someone, anyone to please make them free icons, initially without screencaps. really awkward to see them describe exact needs and specifications after saying they don't believe in paying for things in fandom

a lot of people in this community live privileged lives or come from privileged backgrounds. it shows in the way they prioritize their spending and the way they expect others to do the same no matter what the state of finances.

the sheer amount of financial exploitation that gets a pass or is actively encouraged in this community is mindboggling, too.

like, if someone's got the money to drop on icons, good for them! spending money on hobbies is absolutely, one-hundred-per-fucking-cent normal for people who have even a tiny amount of disposable income, and paying for icons is one of the better ways to do it. it involves either or both of paying dw itself for icon space, which is good because dw is one of the precious few sites on the internet that isn't fucking blanketed in shitty ads, and paying icon makers directly, which puts every cent over and above any payment processing fees directly into the hands of the person making the icons.

how is this something worse than the money people spend on literally any other hobby in existence? whether it's crafting materials, endless books, art supplies, snooty craft beers, what have you.
