no more applications with words in them. only moodboards, playlists and memes. not like any of you meatballs will answer your tags anyway.

Pass. It's a lot of work for very little gratitude.

you're the mod of a moderately successful game. you recently hired some helper mods to take some of the work off your shoulders. so far they have been helpful and good mods, but you have noticed some of your players becoming less active and pulling back from the game.

but then one of your players comes to you with evidence that one of your helper mods has been toxic and wanky in the past. they have clear screenshots of this evidence, which happened to them and is known to other players (but hasn't been brought to you before). they say they have opted out of the helper mods characters and have been trying to avoid them but this is becoming more difficult as the helper mods become more involved with running the game. they are worried that this helper mod will not be able to act without bias if they ever have a problem with the game and ask for you to mediate. they say that they are not the only player with this concern and it explains why some of your playerbase seems unhappy.

what do you do?

i would remove them and slap my own hands for not vetting people well enough before giving them mod powers. if people have opted out of playing with them in the game and they did not disclose this to you before you brought them on, they should be booted completely.

A player submits an application. The character comes from a series where everyone has complicated and over the top powers and their character is one of the very best and strongest. Think something like Fate Gilgamesh. Their app looks fine and nothing is wrong with it. Their personality is clear and they have submitted sufficient nerfs. However, you know the player is a power gamer. They always try to beat the game with their character, say things like their character can solve every event. They ask a lot of questions about how their character is really special and powerful so can they get special treatment in the game. If you turn them down, they'll complain about how the mods never let players do anything.

They wrote a good app but you know they're going to be a pain in the ass to deal with if you accept them. What do you do?

Re: YOU BE THE MOD

(Anonymous) 2024-06-23 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
if you know this player is going to be a pain to deal with, it doesn't really matter what their app is like or who they play. you're the mod. you shouldn't need to write an essay on why it's acceptable to not let someone in your game. you just don't want to.

sometimes you just don't want to deal with someone you know is going to be a headache. life is way too damn short to grin and bear it. especially if it's your playroom. no. no headaches allowed.

so i would just decline their app. if they asked for a reason, it really depends on how avoidant you want to be. i personally wouldn't mind telling them that due to their past behavior in other game, i don't feel they'd be a good fit with mine and i didn't want to deal with their behavior. i don't want to have to one two three strike them out. i just don't want to deal with them.

Re: YOU BE THE MOD

(Anonymous) 2024-06-23 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
i decline their app because of player complaints. i am still a player.

Re: YOU BE THE MOD

(Anonymous) 2024-06-23 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
I would decline the app and feel 0 regret about it

ultimately as a mod of the game I get to decide who I let in and who I don't want to have to deal with. this person seems like a pain in the ass so I would just tell them "sorry, you're not a good fit for this game, thank you for your time"

(Anonymous) 2024-06-23 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
100% decline the app. Players asking questions about special treatment and tipping their hand about their intent to 'win' the game is a perfectly valid and strong reason to turn down an app.

You are part of a modteam running a game that's been around for a while. A group of newish players apps in and starts really pushing for changes to the game -- let's say the original game is a sex-positive fantasy game that sometimes has sexy events but is mostly gen, and they're complaining that players don't interact with the sex part enough, the game needs a smut AC implemented, there should be IC punishments for characters who aren't banging enough, and so on.

Your existing playerbase isn't really into most of these changes and the game has never been an outright sex game, but the outspoken new player faction is INSISTING that it needs to be the smutty fantasy sex game they seem to have thought they were joining. What do you do? Does your opinion change if a lot of the new blood is more active and engaged than the older playerbase, or if some (but not a majority) of your existing players like the idea of going more sex game-y?

Re: YOU BE THE MOD

i'd give them more sex game style events if there was demand for them and they got a lot of play. optional events.

i wouldn't implement anything that punished characters or players who weren't interested in smut. at that point it's not about the new players liking that element of the game and wanting to focus on it, it's them wanting to penalise and push out others who don't share their preferences. if i have players who prefer the gen fantasy content, i don't want them to feel unwelcome. the answer to "this player doesn't interact with the sex part enough" is "that's fine, they're not required to".

so, shift the focus of the game a little, yes. change the structure of the game or ooc mechanics, no. and that holds for any two genres - if i have a sci-fi horror game and a bunch of horror fans join, i won't drop the sci-fi part because they're less keen on it. might plan some more spooky stuff though.

i'd doublecheck that my premise/setting reflect the kind of game i'm running, and that i'm not misrepresenting it. if i'm in the clear there, i'd carry on as usual, because i know the kind of game i want to run and that my established playerbase has been enjoying.

if i'm not, and i've been misrepresenting the game, i'd check in with the vocal
new playerbase and let them know exactly what kind of game it is, so they can self select out if it doesn't meet their needs. none of this has to be antagonistic, and it's a matter of clarity.

i wouldn't suddenly shift the game from being primarily gen to smut (or the other way around), they cater to two completely different playerbases and i'd be screwing over old players in the process.

Tell them to play in the game they have, not the game they want, and that any bitching will be warning/ban worthy.

I've seen too many great games die due to a small segment playerbase fighting the premise, fuck 'em.

Just give it time! If your game has really been around for a while, you undoubtedly have at least one hyper-invested player with little else going on in their lives, possibly more. Just let that player get tired of the newbies, write them screeds about how they are degenerate, morally dissolute sluts who don't belong in your game, and as a mod sit back and do nothing until the newbies are chased out. Then sit back and congratulate yourself on a job well done.

You're an anon mod in a game that several players have signed up for not knowing that it's run by an infamous wanker and their buttbuddies. You accidentally Anon-fail and out yourself as one of the mods, leading to players knowing that they're playing in a game Anon-modded by wankers.

Your mod HMDs are filling up with players asking the mods to clarify if one of their members is indeed said wanker. WG and RPA are having w field day with this. The drop train is starting to leave the station.

Clearly your players are just being motivated by smears they've read on wankgate, even if you are the one who anon-failed. Who do you blame for this blunder regardless and why is everyone so fucking determined to persecute you in this hobby?
