It is a factor but it's not the only factor

another factor is the fact most people here are attracted to men

whether they want to write about fucking them or not doesn't matter

more attracted to something > more likely to pay attention to it > more likely to get a voice for it > more likely to rp them > more likely to want to write them smut or not

and on and on it goes

Re: SA

"most people here are attracted to men" literally my entire plurk list is queer ppl who are not into men, but play m/m. so idk who u hanging out with from dreamwidth

Re: SA

your plurk list ≠ this hobby as a whole

come on son

Also, I'm a lesbian who plays m/m. I play it because it's a way to reliably get play and I like RP - it's like wanting cake but the only cake available has no frosting. I'd rather have frosting (play f/f) but nobody else likes frosting so I eat cake without it because I still like cake. I've tried to play m/f but really hated the gendered dynamics my partners almost always brought in, and limiting myself to f/f would result in next to no tags and people assuming I'm a neckbeard/making weird passive aggressive comments.

My muses are about equally split between men and women, but I play the men way more because that's who everybody here is interested in tagging.

I play m/m to fit in, basically, but I'd never say that un-anon because people would be weird about it.

I'm also curious based on the anon's phrasing: Are these people mostly lesbians or are they asexual? Queer people who aren't attracted to men could mean either, and heteroromantic/biromantic ace women are still going to be more interested in men, whereas aroace people are going to have no preference and m/m presents the most options.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-29 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
driveby anon but i am aroace and i play mostly m/f. i dont think ive ever played a since m/m ship actually. obviously thats just my experience but it's interesting

(Anonymous) 2025-01-29 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Makes sense. I should have said y’all wouldn’t have a sexual/romantic attraction based preference, but I can see other reasons for one. If you jive with common tropes/dynamics that are more found in m/f vs m/m that would make sense. Or if you like canon romantic pairings + play main protagonists since most media is still m/f.

Or it could just be coincidence!

(Anonymous) 2025-01-29 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
playing barbie men banging other barbie men with a bunch of other women/nbs/queer people on the internet doesn't automatically mean you're repressed and lusting after irl dick or find irl men attractive anon

your pref in what you wanna rp doesn't mean that's what you're into in your actual real offline life

(Anonymous) 2025-01-29 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
and yet, i doubt people are rushing to rp things they find utterly boring

(Anonymous) 2025-01-30 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
that goes without saying. it also has nothing to do with the convo.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-29 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah i'm a gay dude and the reason why i default to m/m is because 1) it's plentiful and 2) lacks the gendered dynamics of m/f that make me cringe

but i have rped m/f that didn't give me that ick and it was fine

the problem is that finding such m/f players is a needle in a haystack

so many m/f players want to recreate the tradwife strongman shit that puts me off

(Anonymous) 2025-01-29 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
this is a good point tbh, something i've encountered too as someone who plays m/m m/f and f/f

especially when i'm playing a male character, someone playing a female character and coming in hot with the tradwife or sweet innocent princess saved by strong knight fantasy is such a gigantic fuck no for me that i rarely play m/f unless the specified dynamic is strongly nontraditional

(Anonymous) 2025-01-29 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
i've noticed it tends to happen a lot with characters who are not white/are coded as not white. big strong brown/black male with dainty white princess

i hate it in m/m too though. cannot stand pale small uke/dark large seme either

it's also made worse because i tend to play warriors/soldiers given how rpgs necessitate that sort of character

i strongly prefer pairings, regardless of the gender configuration, where both partners are equal

(Anonymous) 2025-01-30 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
i have a jrpg character that i actually prefer to play m/f with but i don't list that as a preference anymore because the last time i did, i immediately got hit up by a bunch of female characters all doing exactly that (the wanting a big strong knight type) and it was a huge turnoff to me.

i don't like playing m/m with him as much but at least the m/m ships i've played with him have been ones where both halves of the ship were on a more equal footing, which is what i really want out of a ship.

there's nothing wrong with playing m/f like the way you described, though, as long as both people are into it

(Anonymous) 2025-01-30 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
he didn't say there was

but you can probably imagine why nonstraight rpers might be more hesitant than others to play into the "this is how men and women are ~supposed~ to be" hetero fantasy

I am definitely not attracted to men IRL (and I've tried) but I play m/m primarily because I want to fit in and it's plentiful. I've recently started writing m/f but I struggle to play a woman in an m/f pair for a variety of reasons (and have dealt with some of them).

I prefer f/f but finding that is a struggle. People tend to be incredibly judgemental about f/f and are more quickly turned off it, imo. Id never say this off anon, though.

Re: +1

people aren't judgmental about f/f, they're paranoid about being tagged by a neckbeard if they list that as their prefs

instead of, y'know, being the change they want to see or acknowledging that they can just not tag back instead of being worried that they'll get internet cooties

as someone else said: do you assume rpers who play murderers just think murdering is neat

Re: dda

(Anonymous) 2025-01-29 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I’d assume they had some interest in the mentality/personality of people who murder, yeah. That doesn’t mean they’re pro murder.

And if they had multiple threads centered around murder, specified ‘murderers only/preferred’, if every character they play is a murderer, and they wanted to play out murder routinely, then yes, I’d assume a personal interest/hobby. (Of a true crime sort.)

A background characteristic is not the same as a central interactive aspect of a thread.

Re: dda

(Anonymous) 2025-01-29 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
i probably wouldn't play a murderer if i had no interest in exploring some aspect of them being a murderer, no.

Re: SA

(Anonymous) 2025-01-29 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
look, it's really simple

if someone has a dick, they're either playing moemoe animu waifublobs or the guys fucking the moemoes, and it's obviously due to their overwhelming slavering lust

if someone has a puss, they're only going to play hot dudes they swear they're not attracted to fucking other hot dudes they swear they're not into, because obviously their rp is pristine and pure and intellectual and has zero component of sexuality whatsoever no matter how raw the fucking
