I think there’s definitely a subset of RPers who think regurgitating canon is all they can do, who make characters static, never grow past their attitudes/issues in canon. But the best RPers will play a character who is recognizable from their canon self, that get from point A to B in a matter consistent to their personality/thought process from canon.

presumably the first set play these characters because they think their canon attitudes/issues will be interesting to explore and write about.

i'm much less bothered by static characters than by the ones who end up bland and unrecognisable, usually holding all the writer's opinions. often with the excuse that the new game setting means they can finally be their True Self, which is nothing like canon.
