I so badly want to believe this is bait. Surely there's no way someone would speak this confidently on a subject they're this wrong about, right? But I know what sort of world we live in, so...

1) The Nintendo DS outsold every other console to ever exist with the sole exception of the PS2.

2) One of DWRP's largest fad fandoms ever was Fire Emblem Awakening. People still play from the older Ace Attorney games. The World Ends With You, Fire Emblem Fates, Zero Escape, Professor Layton, Bravely Default, and the Advance/DS/3DS Castlevania, Zelda, and Pokemon games all had a modest to major presence in journal RP at various points.

3) Do you genuinely think that games like Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI or even Golden Sun had smaller and less complex stories than most RPGs?

I'm sure some anon is going to latch onto my 3DS example and argue that counts as 'recently' while ignoring the other examples I gave, but what can you do?

Not that this disproves what you’re saying, but I’ve never seen anyone RP from half of these canons. I still see people RP from FFVII and Dragon Age though

anon i know the op who kicked off this discussion is wrong but acting like meme only players are second class citizens who don't get an opinion isn't any better

it's no secret that roleplay around these parts is suffering from a lack of games. that most games are private. that word of mouth and networking are now more important than ever

some people don't have time for games either or it's just not their style. and that's fine

meme only players aren't any better or worse than game players

read the bolded. you're making an assumption too. them not seeing these canons played in their turf doesn't mean they don't have enough experience in dwrp to comment about it

back in the old days you had a better idea of what canons were popular and what canons were not because most games were public and you could see the taken lists, the reserves, the apps, etc

that's harder now. there's a ton of private games so you can't see what casts are ballooning, people bring all kinds of muses to public spaces like bakerstreet including rare muses they only rp as one offs and/or ad hoc

i'm in a game right now and there's not a character from those canons in it. but i've been here since 2001. do i not have enough experience to comment because i haven't seen those canons in a while?

Some of these might have been before your time. FE:A and TWEWY's heydays were a while ago.

But that's just another counterpoint to stupid 'no one played from mobile/handheld games until recently' claim. Some of these fandoms are old enough that some people don't realize how massive they used to be. Hell, TWEWY rise and fell before we even migrated to Dreamwidth. That was a fad canon in the LJRP era.

anon i have been in games that had characters from ace attorney, twewy, fire emblem awakening, and zero escape in just the past few years. they're canons that are still very much played from even now.
