are you kidding me the storyline is so ridiculously stupid that it doesn't even take itself seriously at times.

i've yet to play a survival horror game that's had an unironically good storyline, and i've played pretty much all of them. horror vidya needs to stop trying to have storylines "mean" something and focus more on being scary. the best horror plot lines are in games that aren't actually categorized as "horror" like, as another anon said, the walking dead. or spec ops: the line.

Your problem is that you're looking to psychological horror for jump scares when they're two completely different types of scary.

As much as I love Silent Hill, what are you talking about? Original SH alone had more jump scares than The Walking Dead and Spec Ops: The Line combined.

tbh I don't think people count them because all the mindfuck is coming from expecting jump scares and not getting anything. When you actually get the jump scares it's just confirming the status quo and not seen as an actual scare vs when you're completely wrecking yourself over the slightest noise because you're expecting one and it's not being delivered.

I like Spec Ops: The Line too but objectively I don't think its story was really any better than Silent Hill 2. In fact they actually both deal with similar themes (the reactions to and rationalization of guilt and trauma) so I'm not sure how you can say one had a good storyline while the other didn't.

I'm sad cause I love both of those games so much so people saying mean things about either is like seeing your parents fighting

da but maybe the issue is one is more engaging than the other? it probably depends on what kind of gameplay you like

Re: OVERRATED SERIES

(Anonymous) 2013-01-21 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Because one dealt with actual issues of PTSD and the other was just like OMFG DEMONIC SACRIFICES AND INDIAN BURIAL GROUNDS AND SHIT ALSO ALESSA??????

Silent Hill's storyline is really stupid.

as someone who does think SH1's plot with DEMONS AND ALESSA wasn't top notch, anon above did specifically put 2

which while it's seeped in the setting/environment in the first game, it all feels a lot more backgroundy because the game really focuses on james and the people inside and their psychological issues
I really like 2 and wonder if sometimes people just pretend the rest of the series is more like it instead of CULTS AND DEMONS AND KAUFMANN DOES SOMETHING I GUESS! AGLAOPHOTIS! PROMISED LAND!

Re: OVERRATED SERIES

(Anonymous) 2013-01-22 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
except that the entire plot of silent hill 2 was about james' repressed guilt for his actions and the "demons" in the game were representations of his own inner demons and didn't actually exist?

seriously, spec ops: the line borrowed a ton of story elements from silent hill 2.

if you really believe that last sentence, you're a fucking idiot who has silent hill 2 shoved so far up your asshole that there's no hope for you at all. sh2 was not the first thing to do what sh2 did. spec ops: the line was mostly influenced by the book heart of darkness by joseph conrad, which also influenced the movie apocalypse now. there's also a lot of stuff pulled from the movie jacob's ladder, which, i might add, was also a huge inspiration for

DUN DUN DUNNN

silent hill.

this is why i say silent hill is a really overrated series with the worst fandom ever. you are the personification of my claims. i hope it feels good.

As someone who likes both games, you're the one who's coming off like you've got Spec Ops: The Line shoved up your asshole.

They're both good games. They're both different games. The designers of Spec Ops: The Line are big horror fans so it's entirely possible that they were inspired at least partly by SH2 too. It's not an out of place assumption to make.

Re: OVERRATED SERIES

yes, because i know what works of horror inspire other works of horror, i have spec ops up my ass. you are a god of logic. the anon i replied to said that spec ops "borrowed a ton of storytelling elements from sh2" and it's just not true. in fact, it got a ton of flack because it was actually just a gigantic ripoff of heart of darkness and people felt that it lacked originality because of it -- NOT because it resembled sh2.

i just can't stand sh2 fans who think that sh2 is the best shitting thing to ever happen to horror and don't realize that sh2 WAS NOT the first thing to do what it did, and that if something is similar to it, it doesn't necessarily mean that that thing was inspired by it. likely, it was more inspired by the things that inspired sh2 in the first place.

i actually like silent hill. i think it's fun for a playthrough. but it is EXTREMELY overrated, and this thread is proof of it.

tbh all I see in this thread is people basically saying that they like the games, and that there's valid reasons for people to like the games, and yes, even valid reasons for people to consider them really good games.

You're the one who seems to be overdramatically ranting and raving about it.

I've got no doubt that Silent Hill's fanbase can be super obnoxious (like... you know, most fanbases), but wow. Chill. Seriously.

/in b4 accusation of being an obsessed SH2 fan- I actually get really fucking annoyed to see people squealing about how anything new that remotely resembles SH2 storywise is ~JUST LIKE IT AND MUST HAVE BEEN INSPIRED BY IT SQUEE~
So don't think I don't find that annoying, I'm just not seeing any of it here in this thread like you're claiming.
