Maybe it's because I've never once had anyone on plurk (even friends that used to be with me on AIM) PP me with just a "Hi!" or whatever you have it, so I assumed it's not a thing that people do.
I use it regularly for private IM-style conversations in addition to public plurking. It suits my usual online chat style far better than the way most people seem to use IM.
