If anything, the asterisk is almost annoying me more than the usual catchall term. "Transgender" and "transsexual" aren't even the same thing, because gender and sexuality aren't the same and there's a spectrum for each of them. I'm okay with using "trans" as an abbreviation once the context has been established, but "trans*" is too much of a blanket term to be throwing around. Inclusiveness is great, but for something as touchy as gender/sexuality issues, I think it's better to respect people's individual identities. IMHO, even the word "trans," with all its connotations of making a complete "transition" from one gender binary to the other doesn't really reflect what I see in the "trans" community.
