I play from a series that's not just 7 books long on its own, but has 2 additional canon sources, and ties in to at least a dozen other works by the same author. I love the series and I will happily reread it for fun and not just to canon review, but it's a lot to ask for most people. And while I do occasionally see other Dark Tower players out there, I don't really expect to see them often because it's not something most people can just jump into.
Of course, I've heard talk of a movie adaptation for many years now and while part of me would love to see it, I wouldn't want to play with a sudden influx of movie RPers. Also, I have yet to see a Stephen King adaptation movie that wasn't disappointing on some or all levels. But that's a different issue.
Anon I just started read The Dark Tower books so maybe I will join you one day. I've already read Talisman and Black House (probably should have done those after the Dark Tower...) though, and I had a Henry Leyden muse. I was afraid of picking him up officially because I don't think I could pull off that much awesome, but it would have been fun.
I've toyed with the idea of playing Roland, Eddie or Callahan but won't for those reasons- myself, I've only read the series and not any of the graphic novels or King's other books. I think it would be awesome to have a character who's used to dimensionhopping and is fully aware that they're a fictional character though, because they could bypass the usual "WHERE AM I WHERE'S MY FAMILY MEMBER/BEST FRIENDS/MENTOR THEY WERE JUST HERE A SECOND AGO" and jump straight into playing and learning about other worlds. and tooterfish popkins...
It's a shame the review is so tough, I would love to play with a Roland again. I actually play one of Roland's original tet, so there's less to review when I want to canon review, but then it gets tangled in the comic series and even messier when you get into other books that sort of relate.
It was a lot of fun in a more crack oriented game to be more interested in seeing a whole room full of books than to ponder being in a new world.
