I despise how book canons are ignored on DWRP. Everybody just plays from a handful (Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, ASOIAF, LoTR and Twilight). Despite being probably the most diverse medium of them all, the sheer number of canons from it and the rise of ebooks very few people play from outside those five canons (and maybe one or two more I'm forgetting) and it's usually only some lone canon warriors out there. Is it the fact you'll need a PB for most of them driving people away?
I'm pretty sure it is in fact exactly that diversity that makes book muses rare. We're so fandom-focused, and by extension cast-focused, that the huge array of books below the first popularity tier is basically crippled in comparison to TV and vidya mediums, because there's just so much more of it that it's harder to accumulate a cast from any one thing. And since people will often be lured into trying canons and apping from them by people who already play from it, there's a cumulative effect. Movies are sort of in between - there are plenty, but usually from recent blockbusters that also have the popularity to sustain casts, at least for a while.
I play from Discworld, Dresden Files, Good Omens, Vampire Chronicles, and a couple others. There are book players out there for more than just the biggest titles.
Also play from the Vampire Chronicles, plus some other obscure stuff nobody's heard of.
We're out there, I just think those of us who exist either don't play exclusively from books, or just get hard to see through the more popular mediums like anime and LA tv.
For me it is the fact I'll need a PB tbh. Not the idea of the PB itself but trying to pick one I like that won't get confused as another character by people who can't be assed to read or that won't have people accusing me of picking a popular PB to get more tags.
For example, I have a journal for a book character (not one of the canons you mentioned), but the only PB I've found so far that I liked is one of the characters from Game of Thrones (the show version). No one else I've looked at so far fit as well, but I know people would be tagging me expecting that character or something equally dumb. I know that's kind of a flimsy excuse, but I don't have enough time or desire to try much harder than that. I keep saying "Maybe one day..." but it never happens.
Kind of sucks because it's an awesome character and if I could pull him off I would have a lot of fun but ah well.
I play from a lot of book titles, but they're from pretty obscure YA stuff that not a lot of other people read from. I agree with the other anons that a lot of people are fandom-focused and that not a lot of people read that often.
Temeraire is a pretty popular book canon (Popular as in 'oh shit I've seen casts at like three different games') despite not having a movie adaptation. I think it just depends on the book and if people will read it or not.
Honestly, there's a character from a book series that I really, really want to play, but there's a few things that have been stopping me from it:
1) I do NOT want to look for a PB. Like, at all. I've done this idly before and it just annoys me how actors are all consistently of the same "look" and models just have the same face over and over again. I know I could commission icons, but I have a tendency to go through a lot of 'muses" before one sticks, and I'd hate to spend a lot of money on icons I would end up not using much.
2) The writing in the books is so good that it intimidates me. I know I'm not as good of a writer as the author of this series, and her prose and characters are so good that I know I'd just come across as a pale imitation of it. I don't know, I guess since I mostly play from anime and manga I usually don't feel bad about how mediocre my prose is because the original canon doesn't really have prose, but I feel like I'd just be mimicking the wording on this one.
3) I'm obsessed with constant canon review to make sure I stay IC, so I usually play from shorter series. Reading a book just takes me longer than skimming through a manga or sitting down for an anime that's only a season or two. (It's also harder to just flip through and find parts relevant to the character I'm reviewing for with a book, since I can't just skim or fast-forward through until I see their face and have to keep an eye out for their name.)
4) The author has been known to show up on LJ to interact with her fans and I'm afraid of her seeing and being embarrassed about how poor my writing is.
The expectation that I get some dumb model/actor to PB. I don't want that at all, because if I do, people only respond to the pretty face, not to the character, and it's blatantly obvious.
Besides, getting PBs for female POCs is near impossible anyway, so I pretty much give up.
I play one of the cats from the off-shoot series from Young Wizards from time to time, but damn it all if finding decent calico cat images for icons gave me a tough time. It's all either blurry or watermarked stock photos. I wouldn't mind trying out playing one of the dragon keeper kids from the Wild River Chronicles someday, too, but they would be even harder to find a PB for considering, uh, how unique they look...
There's a handful of book canons being played at my main game rn, though. They're all pretty fun!
Another book-loving anon chiming in to admit the PB issue is a problem for me. I really hate all the vague sameface that models have, and using an actor or drawn character always makes me think I'm just going to be taken for playing that instead of the character I'm trying to play.
Too, I also prefer having castmates. Aaaand... yeah.
I play from a series that's not just 7 books long on its own, but has 2 additional canon sources, and ties in to at least a dozen other works by the same author. I love the series and I will happily reread it for fun and not just to canon review, but it's a lot to ask for most people. And while I do occasionally see other Dark Tower players out there, I don't really expect to see them often because it's not something most people can just jump into.
Of course, I've heard talk of a movie adaptation for many years now and while part of me would love to see it, I wouldn't want to play with a sudden influx of movie RPers. Also, I have yet to see a Stephen King adaptation movie that wasn't disappointing on some or all levels. But that's a different issue.
There's one character from a book that I'd love to play somewhere, but never will, and have a few reasons for that:
1. Finding a PB for him would be a pain in the ass. Doesn't help much that he at times changes his hair color up. 2. Long ass book series and doubt there's a wikia summing the plots up. Oh, and the character is around 11,000 years old, yeah, I don't want to write that history section. 3. His powers would make most mods cringe profusely. Yeah, he's a god so it's expected, but he's pretty damn powerful even among gods. There's not many of his powers that wouldn't require a permissions post as well. 4. Most of what makes him interesting wouldn't be doable in a game. What's neat about him is that he knows everything and won't tell you a damn thing except some vague comment that seems to have nothing to do with anything but ends up being completely key to everything. He even knows the winning lottery numbers, but at most he'll tell you there's a six in there somewhere.
Yeah, definitely not someone playable in a game even if I wanted to write that massive history section.
I played from Seanan McGuire (as Mira Grant, but who cares, it's still Seanan)'s Newsflesh Trilogy for a while, and the PB part was hard, but knowing the author is active around the fandom was what really made playing the character harder. I had this paranoia that suddenly Seanan herself was gonna be on my HMD going 'yeah, but you need to do X, Y, and Z!', even if I had my Kindle right next to me going over the character's dialogue and thoughts and all that while writing every single tag.
And right now, after the Hugo nominations for Blackout and Last Stand of the California Browncoats, it's really intimidating to even think of playing from Newsflesh.
