sorry, reading this back and realizing it was unclear

the point im trying to make is if you posted xena warrior princess and requested castmates only, and i threw disney's hades at you solely because xena knows some olympians so they MUST be from the same canon, youd probably be kind of fucking pissed at me

because we're not canonmates just because both canons draw from the same very large well of inspiration

But by design OCs don't have canonmates. So asking if other iterations of greek gods is okay makes sense to me, especially when there would be medium divide. Xena and Hercules are both media canons, so it would be more clear. The confusion starts with the OC saying canonmates preferred.

but theyre their own canons. they are not castmates with random lapb ocs any more than those canons are affiliated with each other

id just assume an oc asking for "castmates only" would be looking for other ocs

you could ask them, sure, and thats probably more productive than dragging it here. but i think its pretty dumb to just assume every single "inspired by greek mythology" or whatever series is the same canon and theyre all castmates with each other. you wouldnt do it with canon characters, so i dont understand why you would do it with ocs when the simplest explanation is just that they mean "other lapb mythology ocs" and the canon is the mythology itself, rather than other established properties

Then two say, Hades greek myth pb OCs would be from separate "canons"? How do the OCs traverse these waters? What if the original "canonmates only" Hades OC doesn't like your Persephone OC? Is she suddenly no longer his "canonmate" because she's not the Persephone OC they imagine in their "canon"? Where does it end?

One person might write their Hades completely differently than another Hades, because they have no true canon backing to follow besides some vague stories about some dudes. To me two Hades OCs would be from ""different canons"" because they can be played that much differently. If you're both playing Iron Man you have to follow what Iron Man does and keep him IC, the OC players don't have guidelines like that. So yeah, they would be separate "canons" to me.

did you guys forget that mythology is its own canon with a baked-in setting and stories and rules or something? that people arent just making hercules up in their heads just because they dont use icons from disney? that thats basically where we got the term canon in the first fucking place?

factually incorrect. i've come across a bunch of people that make ocs from the same worlds together. there was a game way back in the lj days that had people need to make ocs from cards. i've also seen what i assume are friend groups throwing ocs on memes that they clearly made together, so while the genre 'oc' doesn't have castmates as a general rule, it's not true that some ocs might not have some cast from the same oc pool if a friend/rp partner makes a sister/lover/enemy for them.

maybe. but they're at least stating their preferences, for their own friend oc cast and if they don't tag someone who's not in that group back, it'd be on that person who tagged them if they got butthurt about it.

if you actually pay attention to who's posted, you can see if there's a group of 'uses pretty pbs who are way too white to be the god they're portraying but yay, gods' posting together and that they're all tagging each other. it's on you if you get buttmad your xena char isn't 'canon' enough for them. live and learn.
