please help anons, i'm asking here not to start wank but because i feel like this is where you go to get unfiltered and honest advice.

i have a friend who plays characters i'd love to rp against, but lately they're obsessed with turning characters trans. they rewrite them in order to just make them trans. i am extremely uncomfortable with this and i don't want to play with trans-hc characters, but i don't know how to articulate this without being accused of transphobia. like, it's my friend and i assume they won't be so aggressive about it, but i expect them to want a reasoning for me to want to play with... the canon cis version instead. i really don't know how to approach this in the nicest way possible. any advice is appreciated

tell them you dont want to play those characters with them and then find someone else without weird hcs to rp them with?

+1 you don't gotta explain yourself anon, and less is more in this case. just say you're not interested, nothing more, and move on to someone else.

there's no way for people with weird trans-hcs to not get offended about them and screech transphobia when people don't like them. otherwise they'd be fine playing them as cis/canon.

honestly unless you're writing smut/some random scenario where people are running around with their junk out, you can always just ask not to incorporate it into threads bc you're not interested/comfortable with including those elements into rp. any further reading into it is on them.

i've never seen anyone with a trans hc not make it the point of the character though. i've seen actual trans characters who don't even bring it up or rarely do, but if it's hc it's there because they want to make a thing of it.

They HAVE to make it a point that the character is trans and often in a weird transphobic way too. Like mentioning a trans girls "masculine" features or emphasizing a trans boys wide hips and shit like that. And then the character opens their mouth and spews the muns weird soap box beliefs just to round it out

ok??? that doesnt mean they dont exist though. i know several people that do trans hcs and its non-intrusive and not that big of a deal.

obviously thats not always a given, but the only reason im giving any benefit of the doubt is because op said they're friends.

hate to say it but it's true. i've played with trans ocs and canon trans characters before and they didn't make a big deal about it, just a "btw they're trans" in their character info/top-level and then it never came up in the threads themselves unless there was a reason for it. it's only the trans hc players who make it the whole focus of the character.

problem solved. why do you think you need to tell them why you don't want to rp with those characters? you're looking for a way to create a problem for yourself when you can just avoid it by not spouting every thought that goes through your head

if you're not comfortable with their headcanons then you won't be able to play with them, sorry. it's not up to you to tell someone how to play what they want to play (and this is coming from someone who also hates trans headcanons). go find someone else who plays the canon versions of the characters

ehhh. I would say it's out of character and not ok in games to make cis characters trans just like it wouldn't be okay to make trans characters cis. If you want to do that in memes or psls fine but shoving trans headcanons as "canon" when they're not isn't cool.

it is if the reason you don't want to play with them is because the character is trans

if making the character trans somehow affects the actual characterisation of that character and that's why you don't want to engage (read as: if the player is actually being ooc, because hcing a character as trans outside of games is not inherently ooc itself) then sure, that's fair

i've played both canon and non canon trans characters and you wouldn't know that about them unless you read it in their journal because i rarely end up playing smut. an actual good trans hc shouldn't be relevant to threads whatsoever unless it's explicitly a thread about gender and/or sex

Feels like they're also that overinvested One Piece stan who legitimately and unironically recommended the series to someone on rpanons as "morally gray" with well-developed characters and nuance. Obviously could've been someone else but it sure sounded a lot like them.

rewriting a character to be trans does not always make them 100% canon compliant the way more people on dwrp like. usually when people rewrite a character to be trans it goes off the rails into an ic/ooc blur because the player is trans OR a cis person fetishising trans people. this happens probably 9 out of 10 times. it doesn't make you transphobic not to want to play with trans HC characters. it would probably be transphobic to not want to play off a character who is canonically trans (yes they do exist) but not wanting to play off of someones HC does not make someone transphobic.

If they're reasonable you could ask. If they say no, then you can either play with it or look for someone else.

If they're unreasonable just look for someone else because that'll just be a headache otherwise.

Does it even get brought up in their threads? If everything is the same except the genitals then it should be easy to just thread pretending they're canon, assuming it's not a smut thread. But if they play their characters as now being all about their dysphoria and bedazzling their binders and eating all cis ppl then that is uncomfortable and you should say so.
