The amount of people who don't realize that "physician heal thyself" is an expression on the level of "pot calling the kettle black." Someone had to be weird and make it about the bible, but it's a more general proverb. It gets used a lot of different ways because it's become more generalized, but it's like an older version of the meme about putting on your oxygen mask before you help someone else. A sick doctor has to heal before they can tend to patients. There's a "thy" in there because it's old. It did not have to turn into whatever fight people are having above.

i think a lot of people know the concept but not the specific line. like i know about the general idea but that was the first time i had ever heard the "physician heal thyself" phrase.

the fact that so many people don't know it is probably indicative of it not being used as commonly as you think? i've heard 'pot calling the kettle black' probably thousands of times at this point in my life, but i've never heard 'physician, heal thyself'. i probably would have assumed it was from a canon i wasn't aware of, too, but i wouldn't have phrased it the way that other anon did lol. actually i probably would have just quietly kept on assuming.

I think what's causing some of the confusion might have to do with our respective childhoods. I was a pretty bookish kid and I feel like I saw it everywhere, but it's part of this amorphous blob of pre-internet knowledge. Was it actually everywhere or was it just in a lot of things that my local library carried or in magazines my family bought? I don't know, I was an idiot kid reading everything I could read. But it's possible that other anons had similar childhood experiences and heard it a lot during their language acquisition phase. Did it come from somewhere? Probably. But a lot of the general phrases we know and accept all came from somewhere, too. It could be regional, or maybe educational variances.

I'm one of the anons who will die mad about people who drop "to be" before a verb, so we all have a linguistic thing that doesn't translate to an online forum where people of different dialects come together and try to collab. This one doesn't bother me, but that's just because all my anger is in reserve for the next time someone tells me "this needs fixed" in a tag.

same. i've been aware of the whole "helping yourself before you help others" thing forever because that's a pretty commonly-known thing but i was today years old when i learned there is an idiom associated with it.

To be fair, "physician, heal thyself" isn't quite analogous to "put your own oxygen mask on first before assisting others." Their denotative meanings are very similar, but the connotation of "physician, heal thyself" is more along the lines of "get your own shit handled before you think you can go telling others what they should do," or, more broadly, "mind your own business." It's not supportive advice about the importance of self-care.
