morbidly curious to find out whether there's a goldilocks zone between "default layout, therefore doesn't actually care about rp" and the more traditional "excessively fancy layout, therefore doesn't actually care about rp"

serious answer: bare essentials are done, some hobby/aesthetic bullshit is done, the rest is tragically (tragically) unfinished because they're too busy tagging

i've got a legit question for you anons inspired by one of the plurk pet peeves thread right now. have you ever legitimately seen anyone actually consistently begging week after week or month after month and honestly getting enough money to live by from their friends without offering anything in return? the only cases where i've seen someone shamelessly begging for their friends to donate to their gofundme without offering anything in return is usually when there's an emergency with their pet and a lot of people do donate to those because we all love our own pets and are sympathetic. but every other instance of 'i need $200 for rent due at the end of the week' is usually accompanied by 'buy an art commission/icon commission/tarot card reading from me.'

i've been on plurk a lone time. i have a lot people friended and see a lot of replurked shit but the idea of 'the rper living at their mom and dad's house in the basement who refuses to get a job and so lives off all the donations they receive from plurk' is starting to feel more like an rper urban legend than an actual thing that still happens.

weird, i don't remember posting this

(Anonymous) 2023-03-08 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
yes, i have

i feel guilty bringing this person up because they passed away a few years back but at least half of their entire plurk history consisted of nothing but shameless begging for one emergency after another. they weren't living with mom and dad (and tbf i've never seen that as part of the stereotype anyway), but they had no concept of budgeting so every time some problem came up in their life they hit plurk to jingle the gofundme can.

i've been around a long time too and in my experience the e-begger stereotype isn't someone still living at home, it's someone like the above person. out on their own, but completely unable to budget or set aside any money for emergencies. whether they offer some token thing like icons or tarot readings really isn't the point. the point is the sustained burden they put on their timeline by using friends as their break-in-case-of-emergency savings accounts versus just putting away twenty bucks or so each paycheck and taking responsibility for themselves.

The people having sudden emergencies or offering small commissions when they're tight are definitely way more common but I can think of at least seven different individuals I've seen consistently (at least monthly) beg for donations. That's just off the top of my head and potentially past tense, because once I start recognizing the usernames/handles and who's replurking them onto my timeline, I turn off that friend's replurks. It's never remotely money enough to live off of on its own and usually not a gofundme, just "help I'm x short this month can anyone spot me?" type requests with payment options. Not crowdfunding sites or even kofi where people can see them getting money, just PayPal/cashapp/etc. Sometimes they're only asking $20 or so, but sometimes it's hundreds. Sometimes they claim they'll pay it back when they can but when that never happens people stop jumping in to help, sometimes it's a vague 'when I get a job' claim, sometimes it's just the donation request.

I don't see the need to put anyone on blast when I don't know which are still actively begging or even around anymore, but these people have definitely existed. Just not in the numbers wg likes to imply, or as stereotypically. And the description you gave seems like a cross between those consistent begging type and the 'emergency crowdfund but then they go on a shopping spree' type, which have also existed but I can only think of one individual who'd fit in that Venn diagram's overlap and they were ousted years ago.

the plurk ebeggers I usually see are regular asks for smallish amounts. sometimes you get the basement dweller mooching off their parents type but at dwrp's age bracket I actually think it's more likely to be a situation where poor adult children live with/take care of poor older family members, none of whom are in good financial straits while they try to keep the household afloat. sometimes that's paired with bad financial decisions too but just as often imo it's a sad situation where poverty begets poverty.

The type of ebegging that really gets my goat though is when people are asking for really large chunks of money for major life changes they clearly haven't thought through. Like (off the top of my head made up example) asking for 3k to move someplace VHCOL so they can pursue their dream to be an animator, nevermind that they can barely draw animesque stick figures and 3k won't even cover the cost of the move let alone rent and deposit.

Many years ago I seem to remember someone asking for... wait for it... ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY GRAND to buy a house in San Francisco. The only thing more laughable than thinking that your plurk friends would give you 150k is thinking that you could buy a hole in the dirt to live in SF for that much.

i'm not sure about the exact situation you described, but i did see one asking for ~$500 to furnish their new apartment with a couch and that one has lived rent free in my head ever since

the $3k for a cross-country move is another one i will remember. like girl you didn't even look into how much this is going to cost before you fished for thousands of dollars from plurk????
