i definitely don't disagree with you. in explaining why i think they're so reluctant to produce actual deets, i'm definitely not trying to say that i think the path they've picked is the right thing to do or that we should just take everything that's been posted on wg about those two at face value. in fact imo if everything that's been said is true, expiation has much bigger problems than just those two

Talk to me about why they're needed and what the ideal cap to start with would be.

they're needed to stop a game becoming just one cast's drama 24/7.

most big games seem to work well with a cast cap of 10. that's big enough to have a decent cast but not big enough to take over if there are 100+ other characters.

it's just to avoid overrunning a game with a single cast where more than half will most likely squat. never saw a cast bigger than 5 that didn't end up with a bunch of squatters and like two active players.

if it's a small game (1-30 players), around 3 is more than enough. Medium (31-75) would be around 5, and large (76-onwards) I'd go for 5-8 depending on the mods and how big the large game is. That's my ideal.

+1 large casts just end up either start visibly taking over the game (via network posts, player plots etc) or - and this is way more likely - they all squat in each other's inboxes and kill activity because they are the majority of the game and they're not tagging out anymore

It depends really on the players but some franchises are less likely to tag others in said franchise, and that may also depend on which parts are picked up

Case by case for certain franchises though. I won't name any but some are basically guaranteed to barely tag out

Echoing the others, and will cite golden peacock as a great example because they got dogpiled with FATE and genshin, way more than the 10 character cap.

The problem with caps is weathering the hate, because a lot of folks get pissed and that can drive your interest down and in the worst case scenario cause a game to basically whither away

Final Fantasy seems like an example of a franchise where tagging from other installments isn't guaranteed.

(Though my bias may be informed there by the fact that I've never seen an Emet-Selch and Hythlodaeus who'd give other people in their game the time of day, canonmate or not.)

It's a good bias anon. And accurate but the XIV ecosystem on DW are either overpowered rejects(WoLs) or ostracized (they play NPCs instead of OCs how gauche) from the in-game community so it's pretty fucked and not the litmus test I'd suggest

i'm gonna be the one guy and say they're not necessary at all if you're being selective with your apps. i think the most actually well-written characters in one cast i've ever seen was six, and i remember that because of how unusual it was. if you're letting in 10 people from one cast, i'd put money on 4-6 of them being not good. just keep in mind that it's your sandbox, you decide who can play in it, and no game anywhere needs players who'll get their threads dropped after a few pity tags.

nobody is selective with apps anymore, they're basically just filtering for 2nd-grade literacy and vibes that aren't too rancid to tolerate anymore

i disagree, since each final fantasy game is a contained story with their own cast. it would be like trying to put a cap on something like disney vs putting a cap on say... ~~kingdom hearts~~ resident evil. one has multiple entries with essentially the same cast while the other is a conglomerate that is comprised of multiple worlds and multiple casts that have never even heard of each other.

XIV players don't seem to realize they all look like assholes from the outside.

XIV players are why i stopped playing from final fantasy games. Every single one i ran into expected their WoL OC to be relevant to my character from another title entirely because chocobos or whatever else.

DW XIV players are the ones that even the *fuks u gud* rpers wouldn't touch

As an OC player, yes only so I don't have to listen to everyone be a bitter bitch or claim OCs are subverting caps somehow

Plus it'll keep the "but it's not fair" crowd quiet too
