it's exactly this. most of the misogyny i've seen come from other cis women. jamie for example was a pretty egregious case of it, but it's more widespread unfortunately and not limited to this hobby. see: literally anyone who has ever used the excuse "well there are just more interesting male characters!"

i never really thought about how bad it was until i started playing only female characters, and then noticed the stark contrast.

This is my favorite red flag. That perspective is absolutely a choice. If it's a subconscious one, it likely stems from internal misogyny, but people in this hobby are not and never will he ready and willing to have that conversation

because it's not a conversation, it's a lecture. and it's boring.

the truth is there are many more interesting male characters but that's down to the misogyny of the creators and the media industries. multiple big ips have a like 10:1 ratio of male to female characters. the male characters are often better written or have more interesting back stories than the female characters (who usually end up as mother/whore figures or going from caretaker > rape victim > dead).

but it's probably easier for everyone to blame the mostly afab dwrp players who have no power in this scenario for being misogynists than admit that you're a fan of something problematic right?

the ensemble cast with one female character whose main trait/role in the group is "the girl" is a standing joke about modern media for a reason

there ARE fewer interesting female characters. there are, overall, fewer female characters period.

but i admit my horses are coming in last in this race, i like plenty of f characters but i play 99% dicks lol

from someone else who plays mostly dudes: i think part of the frustration is when people brand female characters as uninteresting/annoying/bitchy/unlikeable for the exact same character traits that they drool over for male characters, which IS undeniably a fandom problem

if character A is manipulative, annoying, and rude, it's telling when you bash character B for those same things just because she has a vagina, lol, and it's really transparent when you say "there are no good female characters, take for example Bitchy McMurder Vanessa. now if you'll excuse me i have tags for Bitchy McMurder Jacob to do"

people who like shit canons obviously aren't going to stop liking them just for that, but it's a little annoying to see this tired argument brought out when in 2024 if you're only finding fiction with one female character named Tits McGirlfriend, perhaps it's time to look outside shounen anime

there are so many rpers (and fandom people generally) who will still love and fixate on canons where the women characters are treated as at best accessories to the story. personally, i just feel like life's too short for that, and while i definitely don't judge people for ever liking and playing from those canons (bakugou is my beautiful idiot son too, after all), i do start judging a bit if they are the ONLY canons a person ever plays from.

every time this is brought up, a flock of defensive anons descends to claim that the canons with better ratios for female characters are all gross neckbeard shit and that if you like them then you are simply a neckbeard

lmao both the mcu and star wars have a shitload of female characters and some of them don't even suck

lotr it's pretty true but it was also written by a conservative wwi vet so no shit

early mcu you're valid and correct, but the movies and shows since endgame have been much better in female representation with a wider variety of personalities beyond 'action chick.' to the point that fanboys vehemently accuse it of being the m-she-u now. black widow, wandavision, wakanda forever, the marvels, hawkeye, she-hulk, ms marvel, the upcoming agatha show and thunderbolts, all feature female-centric stories and rosters.
unfortunately people mostly continue rping the same boring hunky dudes.
