there was some shit going around in a "petty things" thread, and people were talking about the use of proper grammar, punctuation and syntax versus emoticons and acronyms blah blah etc
i personally don't give a fuck how people type, but i do assume someone who types with proper syntax is either older (which, fine) or a very young tryhard intellectual. that aside, what i LOVE to DEATH is this fucking anon who's like "well consider me stuffy because i'd rather be perceived that way than to BUTCHER THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE!!!" (except you know, typed well and less paraphrased)
because it's just that person automatically putting a giant "I AM A GIT" stamp on their forehead because they don't actually understand language at all. your use of the english language is just as improper to people 30 years ago, and their english improper to generations before them; language evolves. slang of all kinds constitutes as REAL LANGUAGE. unless you're speaking in english's first, barest fucking forms then you are using the english language improperly according to your shitwitted logic.
tl;dr laughing at but also smh at people having erections for "proper grammar" and "the english language" while understanding literally shit fucking nothing about linguistics or language
i don't care how people type ooc, but feeling like you have to write an essay when talking to someone using proper capitalization/spelling/grammar is weird.
like i said, doesn't bother me. i have some rp friends who type that, and it never really interjects with silly conversation or something
i guess i didn't convey what bothers me super well: for me it's people who have fucking masturbatory attitudes about the god damn way they type like it matters while being ignorant shitlords simultaneously
I use proper spelling and grammar. I would prefer to play with people who get at least close- because it is easier for me to parse correctly (and fuck yes, I am old).
Getting too stuck up about how you write/type in god damn journal RP is just insane. Can't you find something that actually matters to get on a high horse about?
Speaking as someone who types with mostly correct grammar and spelling to the best of my ability (sometimes I make honest mistakes and I do use internet shorthand like idk and lol, but that's the extent of it), I definitely agree with this. Grammar nazi types get understand my skin because it's like, who cares.
I just feel like it's weird that I would be seen as super intellectual or awkward because I don't type in lowercase. I don't give a shit if other people do, but for me, typing in lowercase feels weird and doesn't come naturally. I'd rather type the way I'm most comfortable.
That's weird and I think that's probably your problem more than theirs. Since when does typing with good grammar and spelling = essay? Personally I don't care how anyone types, but I don't get how you can't shoot the shit just as easily with "good" grammar and spelling.
Just because English is a living, ever-changing language doesn't mean I have to like the direction it's evolving. I am the change I want to see in the world, even if that change is simply to not be lazy and type in a way that reflects that.
Can you legitimately not come up with anything else to be that passionate about? I know it's a writing based hobby, and tends to attract people who enjoy writing and have strong feelings about the use of language, but that quote, combined with the subject is surreal.
We're talking about the use of a shift key, here, not world peace.
Back the fuck up, there. How did you get some burning passion out of me not wanting to sound like a lazy asshat? I only meant that there's nothing I can do about other people typing a way I don't like. So instead of just whining like a bitch I do the one thing I can do: not be one of them.
That said, I personally can't stand super-abbreviated chatspeak (guys, even if you're mobile you've got a keyboard: there's really no reason to whittle your words down to single letters anymore, and speaking of looking old that's how my mother texts) but a bit of grammar flexibility never hurt anyone.
Except the pedants, I suppose, but that's their problem.
It makes me want to drop a thread when someone pulls a "u" instead of "you"...yes its a silly thing to be bothered by. But seriously, is not typing two more letters that important?
I find the grain of truth in deeply amusing for some reason.
(for the curious, look up prescriptive vs descriptive grammar/linguistics. I try not to be too much of a prescriptivist, personally, but I do like some standard conventions because jesus have you ever tried to read anything from the 18th century that hasn't been edited for modern readers?)
