When your character is always perfectly prepared for whatever another character might throw at them. Let them be surprised for once, okay? Might actually make threads more interesting.
Because what this is right now is pretty damn mundane.
I just had this happen to me. I had this cool setup, did something cool and surprising, and got absolutely nothing for the trouble. Feels annoying, man.
I get so exasperated over how many players just have to make their characters always prepared, always unfazed, and permanently tougher-than-thou about everything. Even characters who are consummate badasses can have moments where they get caught off-guard, and 90% of those I see played like this aren't that.
It makes trying to play someone chaotic or disruptive into such a shitty experience. Or just playing someone who's capable but not perfect, since they end up surrounded by people who are always on point.
I hate feeling like i have to thread with people not because I enjoy playing with them, but because we play from the same series—even while our characters have never met in canon.
There's this person in one of my games. She's OOC as fuck, but that isn't even the issue.
She's SO BAD with writing I honestly don't know how the fuck she got into the game. I'm not talking the occasional typo or nitpicky comma stuff. I'm talking like I literally cannot understand what she was even trying to type half the time, mostly because of typos.
And yeah, I mentioned it to her and got told it was ESL. And her phone's autocorrect. And everything except something she should fix. And then she got all huffy and PA.
Know what? Even if that's the reason, it's not a damn excuse.
There's a person in my game who cannot handle their characters being disliked or insulted. Any offhand comments or CR that isn't getting down on all fours and licking their character's ass is enough to make them PA plurk and feel anxious and uncomfortable. If this wasn't bad enough? Their character in canon is an asshole and they're still pretty assholeish in game. They're a shitty person and not everyone is going to get along with them, but apparently they don't feel like playing out the negative CR their character would probably get and they like to emotionally manipulate people by guilting them and getting depressed over it.
Yep. I mad. I know I'm going to have to crit them, but past situations involving explaining this shit to them ends with PA plurking and bawleeting shit.
When people take it as a personal offense that my posts get 100+ tags when their posts get 10.
RP isn't supposed to be a popularity contest. This doesn't mean that people "just must like me better" as a player. It's probably because I'm around to tag more often. The content of my post might have just appealed to more people than the content of yours. This isn't some gamewide conspiracy plot against you.
event logs filled with open scenarios of characters standing around and looking pretty. or standing around and thinking without outwardly showing any sign of it.
I think I've come to realize that I prefer being a lone canon warrior overall. Doesn't help much that my character actually deals better with not having castmates, than having them and losing them later.
You know, if you're going to PM me asking me for a thread... don't fucking drop the thread.
I don't even know why I bothered to say "Sure, let's thread!" because this isn't the first time I was dropped over someone else. It happened enough times that I stopped playing with the person. But I decided to give them a chance when they PMed me themselves for a thread.
If you've lost interest in the game and almost never do anything, please drop.
Even if yours is a character that no one else will app, please. You obviously don't want to be there and nobody wants to force you to be somewhere you're not interested in being, and it's not fair to other people you're in a cast with to have them have to make guesses at what's been going on between your character and theirs.
Someone in my game was talking about this recently and it just made me feel bad for their castmates, because I know at least one of them is getting really exasperated trying to handwave everything between those two characters ever, and they're supposed to be close. Having to do that some of the time is expected. Having to do it literally all of the time is ridiculous and unfair.
people who act like someone dropping from a game is "selfish."
i don't mean like idling out and never telling anyone. i mean like if someone drops quietly but at least tells the mods and the people they've been threading with and their castmates.
yes, even if it's abrupt and possibly a "ragequit," which one of my fellow players got dogpiled on for a few years ago.
i think players should have the right to drop if they're not feeling the game anymore without being guilt-tripped into staying.
besides, why would anyone want a player to stay if they aren't feeling the game anymore or if they're just ragequitting? they're actually doing you a favor by dropping out.
> play a quiet/introspective character, set up a log > attempt to give said log plenty of hooks, despite the lack of overt dialogue hooks a la "hey you can you tell me ____?" > no bites > well okay maybe people are just busy or preoccupied > check back in hour, another log's gone up with another relatively quiet character effectively just standing there and looking pretty > has 30+ comments and counting
if i ever make a horror or mystery game i'm going to forbid formulation of police or any kind of security detail.
i'm tired of being in games where if someone so much as farts too loud in a corridor and people look, we get "NO WE'RE DEALING WITH IT WE DON'T NEED YOU TRAMPLING THROUGH OUR CRIME SCENE WE'LL CALL SPECIFIC PEOPLE THE HEAD OF THE POLICE'S CHARACTER LIKES A LOT WHEN WE'RE SURE WE NEED THEM THIS PLOT ISN'T MEANT FOR THE REST OF YOU"
i know it's supposed to reflect rl organisation but if i'm in a horror or mystery game, i think we're all part of that force, technically.
i used to run a police force in a game and even doing my best it still inevitably manifested a lot of cliquey secrecy and closed-off opportunities. i decided i'd never do it again. i think it's way better to have a selection of leaders for whom it's character-appropriate, and anyone can just report what they're doing to them for advice, backup, or opportunities, instead of completely relying on their orders.
opposite to above, but when negative CR in the game goes from our characters not liking each other to theirs only showing up to nitpick, make fun of, or remind mine of why they don't get along and its bleeding over into OOC comments too? its really uncomfortable.
I've tried talking to them but I only get that 'no bb theres no problem ilu 4eva cozy cozy' bs while it keeps happening. I feel like there's a point where it stopped being negative CR and became my character as their punching bag.
Playing intuitive characters and having to worry about people crying infomod.
I don't like responding to posts with the same old "WHAT'S WRONG!!!" whenever someone posts to the network with some vague cryptic PA bullshit. If something bad happened like scary event and someone posts something cryptic to the network like "I gotta go away for awhile, etc." then yeah, my character will assume something happened during the event, regardless of whether or not they know the person. It's an easy assumption to make. Sometimes I'll have my character draw conclusions based on what's already been said in public threads so the mun doesn't have to answer the same question three hundred times.
But I'm always gritting my teeth because for every person who is okay with it, there's going to be one that cries to the mods and says I'm infomodding when my character would just really grasp context clues.
People who play way too many characters, make a ton of posts in one day, and the slowly cycle through their characters when it comes to tags.
I'm sorry to say but, if i'm only getting one tag once a week, i'm going to lose interest really quickly. I backtag but a month to get to a grand total of 4? Not worth my time.
players who dont want to own up to real consequences of their characters' dumbass actions.
want to throw up a plot where your character fucks around and causes major OBVIOUS damage in the game? cool! itll be fun to see the fallout.....
oh you want your character to fuck around and cause major damage without getting in trouble because itll be ~upheaval~ for the cast. i see. go fuck yourself.
Granted, you are one of the most passive aggressive people I have ever played with to the point that it leaks into every tag you have done with me and OTHERS. I can't stand the way you write anyone at all.
But more than that, I am sick of people apologizing for your behavior to me. If there's anything that'll piss me off more, it's the spineless people you've twined around your finger that you have saying sorry for your actions.
For the love of god, people, learn to just drop a toxic relationship.
i'm that asshole in your game who gets a million tags for every post i make without even trying to oocly scrape for cr.
sometimes i look at your post that went up at almost the exact same time as mine, and you have maybe one pitytag, and then three days later a second pitytag, and i just wince.
i wish i could tell you what you're doing wrong, other than the fact that you just have zero rp charisma to speak of, but i hope you're at least enjoying the cr you're getting.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-10 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)I'm sorry to say but, if i'm only getting one tag once a week, i'm going to lose interest really quickly. I backtag but a month to get to a grand total of 4? Not worth my time.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)But more than that, I am sick of people apologizing for your behavior to me. If there's anything that'll piss me off more, it's the spineless people you've twined around your finger that you have saying sorry for your actions.
For the love of god, people, learn to just drop a toxic relationship.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)sometimes i look at your post that went up at almost the exact same time as mine, and you have maybe one pitytag, and then three days later a second pitytag, and i just wince.
i wish i could tell you what you're doing wrong, other than the fact that you just have zero rp charisma to speak of, but i hope you're at least enjoying the cr you're getting.
