-journal-based is pretty outdated even though some people swear by it
-written history sections I mostly only ever see in older games (or smaller, 'high standards' games) but at one game i'm in a bunch of older players whined that standards would go down if linked history was allowed
-activity check requirements that have obvious loopholes that let people get away with squatting but can't be changed without an uproar (such as games where you can pass entirely on posts without responding to any tags)
-rules like luceti's no webcomic rule, which at this point is pretty much not being reconsidered because some people like the lack of a homestuck cast
Just because you don't like journal based doesn't mean it's outright crap. Honestly I hate the way most comm based games format things and prefer journal based.
I actually do that just so I have only one place to check for both games. What I dislike is how most comm based games have one comm for network posts, one comm for in person posts, and an ooc comm. And the logs comm is usually ignored for open logs so that's why everyone bitches about networks.
Networks in journal games aren't an issue because we post our network stuff and in person stuff to the same spot, usually combine the two together and people actually will tag a post that has no network component.
But that's mostly because all the wiki's that show my character's history are a hot mess of popular ship pushing, and when I say popular ship pushing, I'm not just talking shit like a couple of canon characters that are close that everyone feels are in love, I'm talking characters that canonically hate each other and characters that never speak, interact or are even implied to interact in canon that people feel are hot together having facts fudged in the wiki as 'evidence' of relationships.
For one of the canons I play from the wiki was written by neckbeards that downplay what's pretty obviously supposed to be a canon ship as much as possible because they don't like the power dynamic.
People who want to squat will find ways around the rule. There have been squatters in every single game I've ever played in and that's probably close to 20 by now.
Some of these rules are really matters of preference, but one thing I agree with is that it sucks when the "old guard" blocks a rule change that most people want. My game switched from journal to community based in the move to DW and the vote was pretty much a 75/25 split in favor of community based, but it still almost didn't happen because the 75% of people who would prefer community based still applied to a journal based game and thus agreed to it, whereas the 25% of people who don't want community based only agreed to journal based when they applied.
I don't blame mods for keeping some old, unpopular rules around because inevitably some people will complain that that's not what they applied for whereas the people who dislike the rule applied knowing it was there.
I know the mods at one of my games want to make some sort of mandatory HMD rule but have resigned because if that kind of thing wasn't there when the game opened, people would throw a hissy fit because they wouldn't have applied if they knew HMDs would be mandatory.
I think I know what game you're talking about. Is this the one where they also almost implemented a ridiculous mixed system because the old guard wanted this "compromise"?
i play from comics fandom. i want my canonmates to know their fucking 50+ year history. you can't always skim wikis for that info and i really hope that most of them do write it out and do know what they're talking about. in a canon with 20 episodes? man, suck it up. write it out. i think it helps understand the character and remember their motivations.
most games i have played in that still accept histories will take them condensed. if you can't write a few paragraphs about your character's life, you probably shouldn't be playing that character. lazy fuck.
I write out the history even when it's not required. In part because I enjoy it, in part because I play comics characters, and I want people to know exactly what history I'm referring since comics are such a convoluted contradictory mess.
Wasn't the rule put in place because there had been problems with people apping or trying to app characters from AU doujinshis? I've heard talk about a "That Ed" that came from a fanmade game or something so I always thought that was the reason behind the rule.

-rules like luceti's no webcomic rule: that was stupid since day one, it doesn't have anything to do with "out of date"

Hell, some of the mods like homestuck, and we even had one of the kids for awhile since the published comics so far are appable.
