the best part is that the coders trace is ripping off already do code tweaks for free, or for cheaper rates than hers.

tbf most of these coders hackjob someone else's work. and often time people take codes and do it themselves anyway. most codes i see around have a credit in the css to someone else, but were severely altered by the person who took it.

i think if they credit the original coders instead of her, it's not really that bad. the money thing eh. but hackjobbing codes is not new to dw nor is it new to the coding industry at large.

like you said, there's a difference between editing the dw given css bases and crediting them, and selling those edits under your own name. credit goes a long way for things like coding. one of the few dw layout makers (fit? iirc) closed their comm and stopped making layouts because people did took their codes and took credit for it.

an important note: i can't code journals from scratch, so if you're looking for css that doesn't fit my 'one single navigation page' aesthetic, i probably can't help you! :c

and

using a blank base code passed my way by the lovely mj ([plurk.com profile] keelahselai), i combine the journal css with a distinctive navigation html in a sticky entry to make the journal look less like a journal and more like a front page to some sort of website.

she says IN THE POST she took the code and jazzed it up for a journal navigation. she wants people to pay her to make it look like how she made it, not that she MADE the code.

tons of people get paid to doctor codes to fit whatever layouts someone wants. the fact that this is being treated as LE GASP moment is beyond me. trace should respect that the coder asked her to take it down but this is ridiculous. people are bitching like shit doesn't get doctored and sold all the time.

ya gonna have unfotable come in and sue people for making money off of making icons for rpers? it's the same principle.

yeah this seemed weird to me. she didn't make the original code, but she's getting paid for the time it takes to match it to what someone wants it to look like. that's like bitching about people selling manga icons they colored, or something. that's what you pay for in the real world, shit you're too lazy and/or unskilled to make yourself.

That circle layout for journals is 100% ripped from another layout. How do I know? Because Trace is so goddamn lazy she didn't even bother removing the transparency overlay, or changing the amount of circles.

I've worked with this chick on html stuff, and she absolutely just edits shit. Is that a bad thing? No, it's not. But it is when she's taking pre-made code and then charging for those edits, and then removing credit. Hell, one of the makers of the codes she uses has repeatedly pmed her to take it down and not use her code, and Trace hasn't responded.

Just because something is free doesn't mean you have the right to re purpose it and then ask for cash, especially when the original codemakers would happily do the same thing. At most, you could say 'if you want to, you can toss me something but it's not required', but it's a HUGE dick move to actually go 'HAI GUYS HERE'S THIS CODE I DIDN'T WRITE, PAY ME MONEY TO TWEAK IT FOR YOU' and I will side-eye anyone who does that shit.

And before you ask: honestly, I don't like icon commissions either. I think it's pretty stupid.

i'm disappointed in liz for commissioning her. though art and code aren't the same, she should know it's not cool to use someone else's work as their own and ASK FOR PAYMENT for it.
