ITT: Writing Pet Peeve

Reading 'bluenette', 'silverette', 'X-haircolorette' makes me literally cringe. Why is this a thing?

Re: ITT: Writing Pet Peeve

(Anonymous) 2016-05-08 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to see this more on tumblr. It boggles the mind, really. Why do people refer to characters by the color of their hair when a simple pronoun would suffice?

da

(Anonymous) 2016-05-08 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
I don't use hair colour for it (unless its really relevant for some reason) but I hate writing he/she/they over and over again, it makes the whole thing seem bland and repetitive. Not to mention it's a pain in the ass if it's two characters of the same gender and you have to do linguistic gymnastics to have the sentence make sense without referring to them by name repeatedly.

I usually pick whatever's the most pertinent trait when I get bored of pronouns and names. Like if it's a fight, what's wrong with saying 'the swordsman' or whatever?

'orbs' instead of eyes. Especially if they add the color. 'His blue orbs opened.'

That's a mentally disgusting picture.

That's correct.

It's 2016, this mistake should not be as prevalent as it is.

The quotation mark goes after the punctuation.

it wouldn't bother me so much if it were a matter of mixing up tenses, but it never is.

i hate words that are spelled the same, but that mean different things and can really fuck up the whole thing if your brain latches onto the wrong meaning.

tear as in to cry vs tear as in to rip.
live as in present tense (living) and live as in 'this is a live show'.
read as in present tense "to read a book" and read as in past tense "he read the book."
there's not a lot of them, but i especially hate them in ambiguous uses or phrases where they could mean either or.
