saying "canonmates preferred" isn't bad or wrong, do whatever you like, but... when their character is a mythology OC what do they mean

Re: MEME PET PEEVES

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
this is just a stab in the dark anon but

maybe

and again, i'm just guessing here

maybe they mean characters from the same myth

Re: MEME PET PEEVES

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
but like, would that include stuff like disney's hercules characters? other off shoots of norse mythology like MCU thor and loki? there's no distinction there at all

da

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
i mean

i would assume it would include other ocs from the same myth

not characters from other canons, who are decidedly not canonmates, due to being from other canons

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Are all OCs canonmates then?

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
are they from the same myth

no?

then no

dda

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I think anon is just saying it's weird for OCs to talk about having canonmates when they by design have no canonmates.

Re: dda

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
sure, i didnt say it was ideal phrasing or whatever

but it doesnt exactly take a genius to wrap your brain around what they mean and takes like "BUT DOES DISNEYS HERCULES COUNT??" and "ARE ALL OCS CASTMATES???" stem either from being intentionally obtuse to miss the point, or from being fucking braindead

Re: dda

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
if they're being purposely obtuse then you're taking the bait, anon

Re: dda

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
i dont care lmao

Re: dda

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, it might be kind of funny or cute if a Hercules god tagged a Greek Myth god OC but the live action PB people probably wouldn't be cheesed about it and would refuse to make it fun, if they tag back at all. So I think it's a pretty decent question to ask.

Re: dda

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
look im not defending the live action pb people and i agree with you

but i dont think you need to ask, really

hercules is not the same canon as rando lapb mythology oc anymore than xena or kevin sorbo's hercules is

it is not difficult to grasp

sa

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
sorry, reading this back and realizing it was unclear

the point im trying to make is if you posted xena warrior princess and requested castmates only, and i threw disney's hades at you solely because xena knows some olympians so they MUST be from the same canon, youd probably be kind of fucking pissed at me

because we're not canonmates just because both canons draw from the same very large well of inspiration

Re: sa

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
But by design OCs don't have canonmates. So asking if other iterations of greek gods is okay makes sense to me, especially when there would be medium divide. Xena and Hercules are both media canons, so it would be more clear. The confusion starts with the OC saying canonmates preferred.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly I'd probably laugh if it happened to me and do that thread, it sounds like fun cr

Re: sa

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah

but theyre their own canons. they are not castmates with random lapb ocs any more than those canons are affiliated with each other

id just assume an oc asking for "castmates only" would be looking for other ocs

you could ask them, sure, and thats probably more productive than dragging it here. but i think its pretty dumb to just assume every single "inspired by greek mythology" or whatever series is the same canon and theyre all castmates with each other. you wouldnt do it with canon characters, so i dont understand why you would do it with ocs when the simplest explanation is just that they mean "other lapb mythology ocs" and the canon is the mythology itself, rather than other established properties

Re: sa

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Then two say, Hades greek myth pb OCs would be from separate "canons"? How do the OCs traverse these waters? What if the original "canonmates only" Hades OC doesn't like your Persephone OC? Is she suddenly no longer his "canonmate" because she's not the Persephone OC they imagine in their "canon"? Where does it end?

Re: sa

factually incorrect. i've come across a bunch of people that make ocs from the same worlds together. there was a game way back in the lj days that had people need to make ocs from cards. i've also seen what i assume are friend groups throwing ocs on memes that they clearly made together, so while the genre 'oc' doesn't have castmates as a general rule, it's not true that some ocs might not have some cast from the same oc pool if a friend/rp partner makes a sister/lover/enemy for them.

Why do we keep dragging people here for stating preferences in a way that we don't like

Re: sa

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
that was always allowed, debbie

im just stating that the way the player communicated this was fine because we dont have language to convey "legendary mythological character with no preexisting canon affiliation" and anons are being idiots about not understand that when they say "castmates only" they mean "other legendary mythological characters from this mythology with no preexisting canon affiliation"

idk it makes sense to me when you're playing from a mythology rather than just rando OC from your super special world in your brain. maybe "canonmates" is not the best word but I don't know if we really have a concise alternative for this. I mean I would even argue that playing a greek god based on mythology isn't even technically an OC, but we also don't really have a word for "legendary character not tied to a specific canon interpretation."

sa

(Anonymous) 2022-02-22 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
*also noting I don't know if the person being talked about here is playing a greek god but the talk of hercules up thread influenced me haha

they wont because op was never interested in tagging them

just whining
