as a wol player i really hate wols like that because it ruins things for the rest of us who aren't interested in shipping and genuinely just want to play out non-shippy npc interactions.

not for nothing anon but literally every wol i've interacted with has been like ayrt describes. i don't know where you are but i've never met a wol like you're describing. ever. if yall exists be more vocal and open about it and maybe scare away the trash fire that are the usual wol ocs please.

exactly. i've given up trying with wols because i have yet to find any proof that there are any who aren't crazy, and the potential gain is just not worthwhile. i'm not even sure i'd play with the wol of a trusted friend anymore because i just hate the character now.

ayrt and i keep mine exclusively to psls or tagging in to friends on memes. there are a bunch of us out there, we just tend to sort of stay in the shadows since the creepy/pushy ones give everyone else a bad name. i don't tag npcs i don't know because of that.

believe me, i'd love to chase away the garbage ones.

honestly? this is just my experience, but how bad an npc player's experience with wol rpers is depends highly on how much special attention their character gives the wol in canon. aymeric and haurchefant are expected to drop everything and be the wol's perfect elf boyfriend without the wol player considering ways to explore their personal demons or motivations outside of them. who cares if aymeric was tortured by his father or that haurchefant has a terrifyingly violent side to him, they need to cuddle the wol right now! g'raha isn't allowed to to do anything more interesting than gush over the wol, like adventuring with them like he's always dreamed of and seeing what the world has to offer. after all, that might require the wol player to actually be creative. on the villainfucker side, zenos and emet also suffer, and whether they're expected to ravish the wol or be domesticated by them depends entirely on whether or not the wol player has a noncon kink. this is all because these different npc/wol dynamics attract pushy assholes who think they can get away with anything and the npc player has to just take it because their character is supposed to adore their self-insert.

meanwhile, i used to play a couple other npcs alongside one of the wol boyfriends listed above, and my experience rping them was much more pleasant. sure, i had to deal with a one or two weirdos here and there, but just the fact that these characters weren't flanderized by fandom to have their lips surgically attached to the wol's ass cheek filtered out the worst of the worst. but that's just my experience, ymmv and all that.

I play one of the "boyfriend" npcs and it fucking sucks bc of everything you just said. I makes me feel like I'm some oc players cumrag every time they tag me and I don't feel like doing exactly what they want. Ofc I drop those tags, but it happens every time and it's "bad faith" to not tag castmates in games so I don't feel like I can opt out of them.

Playing other NPCs is a little better but I've definitely had weirdo WoLs act this way with my girls too and it also sucks.

It's literally not. You can opt out of any castmate you like, especially WoLs. Nobody will bat an eye who isn't the WoL player, I promise you.

i play all sorts of npcs, from boyfriend character to sidequest wonder, and i haven't met a wol who hasn't demanded that i give their precious baby special attention all day, every day. i also have a few non-ffxivs that wols have somehow decided to glom onto, and they still pitched a fit when i turned them down. some wol players just really gotta be the center of the universe, no matter who you play. those ones are the worst.

it's a wol-specific problem, but also it's not: a character you can make look like a fictional, perfect version of your ideal self, who has relationships with likable characters, and who has very little personality or dialogue and can be endlessly projected onto, is always going to be a magnet for the sort of player who wants to be the center of attention and may pitch a fit when they're not. it makes sense to avoid them.

and all these wols have the same personality, whether they're male or female. female wols just want some fantasy of being nonconned or dominated or the "persephone" to emet, or haurchefant is the perfect boyfriend while they're smol and sweet but feisty grrr! the male wols always seem to be the same catboy ukes because every bottom has to have the same personality now.

i use to mostly play major npcs that weren't the ones everyone wanted to fuck and honestly just got ignored half the time by all the ocs. worked for me!

this is unrelated to anything but i wish i had any muse for an npc

i think the only one i might be able to play would be og ancient emet, tho his immediate gravitation towards the wol also made me gag so god only knows what it would be like in actual practice

no offense but even wols who claim they "totally only want gen! no shipping!" still play annoying self-inserts just due to the nature of how ffxiv is. it's why people hate fandom ocs, no one wants to play an npc character and be forced to "remember" your oc and act like they're already best friends.

while i have issues with wol ocs, assumed cr only really happens in memes ime. in the games i've played in, "sry i don't remember you :(" seems like the default reaction to wols, especially if multiples are allowed.

sorry, but the problem with wols isn't that they want to ship with npcs. it's that a lot of them have a self-centered "what about me" attitude towards cr with npcs and can get obsessive about it. while the most infamous horror stories are about pushy wol/npc shippers, this unfortunately also comes up with gen cr, too. i'm not going to make assumptions about what you're like because there are decent wol rpers out there, but if you have trouble getting cr with npcs despite being upfront and open about not wanting to ship with them, that might be why.

i also want to add that sometimes it's more off-putting when a wol insists that they don't want to ship, that they're "different". wols in dwrp try to one-up each other in being the most special and most unique, so this "not like the other girls, so play with me plz" schtick wont work with people who have been badly burned.

this. honestly i'd rather rp shippy or smutty threads with a wol player i know than gen threads with a wol player i don't. if i'm rping with the former, then i've known them long enough that i can trust them not to use me as a fun dispenser just because i'm playing the other half of their wolship. with the latter, there's still a chance they're going to be a self-absorbed asshole when it comes to our cr.

nfn but i have met wols who are married to other wols (who are also being played in dwrp) and they're still nasty assholes. a lot of them also have open relationships so they can still chase their fave npcs, so they're both nasty *and* ship-pushers. you can be the rare decent wol, but the truth is people are still dealing with the bad ones who have pulled every trick in the book to get what they want.
