(Anonymous) 2023-03-07 05:50 am (UTC)(link)I do remember it being sort of a thing in the LJ days, but it was much more variable (a cracky game might have ten events per month that each lasted 24 hours only, some had one per week, etc) and there were also more games that did their own thing. The playerbase got slower so events ended up moving to once per month and have pretty firmly stuck there, and multiple prompts became standard because people who didn't like one prompt didn't want to sit the entire month out. Now almost every game uses a "buffet style" monthly event structure where there are multiple prompts and you can engage with each as much or as little as you want.
That's not always bad but it definitely contributes to games feeling the same (as the prompts on offer will often vary enough that there's no solid genre/tone, and the need for multiple prompts can exhaust mods enough that they fall back on reliable staples like memshare). If you want to mod a game but dislike those types of events, I'd suggest:
-Having a more focused premise that inherently facilitates specific events rather than having characters just living in a world where mysterious forces make things happen. Mission-based games do this. The old Hunger Games game had arenas with different themes. A survival game might have a checklist of tasks that need to be completed. A spaceship game might have a new planet to land on. Build the game around the type of events you want to have.
-Making a game that reacts to player actions instead of having a set event schedule. Things don't happen unless players make them happen. This is better suited to smaller games with an ongoing plot and can be pretty modwork-heavy, but it also lets you meet players halfway with ideas instead of having to pull something out of thin air every month.
