shoot your shot or don't. if you're literally going to pee yourself like an anxiety chihuahua over what it might be so that you never tag, then you shouldn't be rping in a place with people you don't know. and if you tag and they don't tag back? it could be a hundred reasons, from you don't fit their gender/sexual preference criteria, they don't want your canon, they hate your char, they don't like you, medium snobbery, etc.
