Kinda funny because I love to wax poetic in brackets but I also love me a good tfln thread

the difference is tfln is usually fun. 200 comments of blandly describing 2 characters eating ice cream one sentence at a time is not fun

This is genuinely why I fell out of ecats.

I liked the idea of writing lots of shorter tags in fast moving scenes until it turned out 90% of those scenes were just two characters standing in a room having a conversation that only sort of made sense. Even threads that were supposed to be focused and important were regularly derailed by boring meaningless cul-de-sacs.

jokes on you, i write exclusively longform prose tags. i have been namedropped here for my purple prose. i just understand where ecats guys are coming from. theyre writing scenes with a character they like just as that character already is. no need to make dramatic changes for them to have fun with things. they wanna vibe dialogue with someone on the same page. if you arent, no loss to either of you.

but also no need to be weird dicks about it like those people are stupid or deficient in empathy or whatever.

as someone who was originally in very prose-heavy games before swapping to ecats, i really appreciate your INTENT in vouching for different tagging styles, but i think you're kinda off the mark in your understanding of what ecats style is "about."

yeah you have past games like cfud which (as i understand it; i wasn't ecats then) was basically just fucking around and having fun. kinda like mainstream journal rp had …dramadramaduck, i think was the name? in both cases it's about the game's genre, not tag style.

there's another anon downthread who i think gets it more right, which is that the quick back and forth allows for more organic CR development because it genuinely is feasible to play out lower-stakes scenes where characters are kinda dipping their toes in the water of opening up more. on the other end of the scale with very close CR, you get long meandering threads that represent stuff like companionable silence, etc. in a way more like what you might have to do in a tabletop game or larp. obviously in that case, longer paragraphs would work super well, but it is more like stretching that content out over a dozen tags rather than it not existing at all. (also, it is an ecats genre convention to do a lot of body language "acting" through the icon itself, whixh is why ecats players try to have access to lots of micro-expressions in their icons. if you are not looking at the icons when you look at an ecats-style thread, you are missing a lot of characterization choices going on.) i hope all this makes at least some amount of sense.

not all ecats rp-ers are created equal and there are plenty who i find to be deeply boring, but the same is true of mainstream/prose/longform rp-ers. i think part of the reason people have a bad impression of ecats players in their games is because if you can TELL someone is an ecats player, it means they are the kind of person who is too careless or clueless to match the style of the game they're in. so, uh, not the best rep.

i’ve said this before, but a lot of people like this are people who have been in dwrp for a long ass time in my experience (usually) but if you message them or inform them about it then they’ll likely fix it. or decide that maybe rping outside ecats isn’t for them. at least, when i was an ecats player, the culture was to message people if you had an issue with a person’s post/tag in terms of replying to it.

if you don’t approach them and tell them, then they’ll just assume there’s nothing wrong.
