because games have longevity and structure that sandboxes don't

this. if it has a planned plot arc/structure/timeline, it's a game, not a sandbox.

sandboxes can and have had plots/structure/timeline/etc

the difference between the two is purpose. a game is intended to be a community, a sandbox is just a private fiefdom

you want your to call your private fiefdom a game to avoid letting prospective players know what they're getting into

it's because they're completely incapable of admitting they've fucked up and accepting the consequences of their fuckups, and think if they can ~objectively~ prove they're entitled to access to other people's spaces, everyone will be so dazzled by their brilliance they'll welcome them with open arms. because who doesn't love a smug, droning nitpicker?

Last I knew a sandbox was an unstructured setting that encouraged players to come up with their own plots and ideas

I can't tell if people are just that bored or are that buttfurious about whatever the hell is going on now, but it involves mods

pretty sure a sandbox is a place to play in without obligation, kind of like memes

a game has structure, plot, ac, and all that jazz

how they get players doesn't change what they are

either way a sandbox can also kick out annoying players by mod discretion so it doesn't really matter

No, sandboxes can’t have structure/plot/timeline. The definition of a sandbox is a place for unstructured play, where maybe the setting is defined. You know, like an actual sandbox. Where little kids do whatever, in the same place but not really cooperating on the same thing.

If it has a continuous and consistent narrative, rules, mechanics, npcs, then it’s a game. One you’re not welcome in, but you’re not welcome at some random stranger’s living room D&D game either.

when any public game closes and says "the comms will stay open as a sandbox, but there will be no more event posts!" they really mean "the game is now a private fiefdom." got it!
