i used to think private games were really few compared to public games (which aren't a lot anyway) until i befriended a group that seems to have a new private game popping up every month

no one's saying private games are rare or don't exist, just that it's not the case of a vast majority of DWRP retreating to private games like some anons seem to think it is. there are some private game only players, and some players who play at both public and private games, but public games are still very popular.
