there's nothing wrong with intentionally short-run games but a lot of dwrp players like games they can play at for a year or more. is that really surprising?

not to mention, the few small private games i've been in have died off pretty fast not because they're short-run on purpose, but because a few players flaked out or moved to a different game and if you only have 12 players it's a pretty big hit to lose 4.

yeah, i can't think of many private/invite-only games that reached their one-year anniversary. it's much more difficult to get fresh blood, since the applicant pool is a closed-off circuit.

it's even worse when two similar private games open in the same friends(-of-friends) circle. the names will be obvious, but please let's not use them to avoid getting the thread frozen: one big fantasy invite-only cuddle game bled out a lot of player interest when another big fantasy invite-only sandbox opened a few months ago, partly because there was overlap in the friend groups of the mods, and the same people didn't really need their same needs met by two different games. imo private games are much more at risk of cannibalizing each other than public games are.

i hold off on joining private games now for this specific reason until they've got a healthy playerbase and maintained consistent interest for a bit. got really interested in a few before only to have them slow down and fizzle out within three months max, and at that point it just feels like wasted time

the last few public games i joined died way sooner than that

really?

i can't even think of a public game that died that fast except the ones that never got off the ground in the first place

maybe quix's and gsai's?

there were a few very short-lived games towards the end of last year. nightfell and rhodos come to mind.

there's literally a new game rule on wankgate because so many games got wanked out of existence before or at the time of opening
