"i don't get why some anons here want to act like the community has largely fled public games"

because a large chunk of the community has, it's just a fact. i can name at least 50 different players that i know of who used to play in public games and now play exclusively in private games and i'm not even that deep in the private game circuit. i'm sure there are probably a whole lot more that i don't know personally.

Before the current Private Game Discourse there was already a general movement of players leaving public games and solely playing in PSLs or just sticking to their friend circle. It didn't kill public games then and won't now but this is just a continuation of trends that have been happening for a while.

and before that we had a huge splintering of playerbase attention between public games and memes, which was heavily deepened by the introduction of bakerstreet. that didn't kill public games either.

public games will always have the advantage of bigger size, much easier recruitment of fresh blood, greater diversity of players and more vocal hype that sustains engagement. it's always been the case and imo unlikely to change. public games are open to everyone and reap the rewards of greater popularity for it.

ehhh I think that's a big generalization since you can argue that private games have the advantage of a stronger community, more engaged players (at least when it's a short run game), and more hype because the games tend to be more events with interesting plots opposed to the generic sandbox with nothing changing anyone can join over there when all else fails

pros and cons to both

yeah, for sure, not trying to put down private games. i think public games have an advantage when it comes to long-term survival. i've found the private games i've been in have had the advantage of the experience, exactly for the stuff you mention.

it's down to what everyone prioritizes in their gameplay, to be honest, and i don't think anyone's wrong for choosing one over the other. i just don't really see public games going out of style or dying out.

i mean, yeah, idt public games are going to vanish entirely.

i'm actually the 'oops! all squatters!' anon below who pointed out the check in ac thing, since that's been my experience in all of the indefinite run private games i've tried joining. nobody tags, everyone wants to pretend like they're in a game. in one of them, the players (including a mod!) all prioritized their other games which all had one thing in common, and that's that they actually had an ac that wasn't just check in.

but i'm not going to pretend like that's a universal experience, especially since a lot of my friends are private game people and have had good experiences. i'm mainly saying that i don't think it's just as black and white as 'one has an advantage to survival and the other has an advantage to experiences' since i know in the last big, established game i was a mod of i quit, the headmod + secondary mod syphoned players to their private musebox invite only game, and the big public game collapsed in 3 months. (the musebox game went on for a while but eventually died when the headmod ran a rape plot iirc and nobody could ignore a plot which was 'the headmod's character raped someone what do')

+1

people were making the same arguments about how ljrp was dying back when we were on livejournal. go back to the beginning of this comm and there are people blaming everything they can think of and saying "this is why dwrp is dying".

10+ years later we're all still here lmao

it's also a fact that a large chunk of the community continues to play in public games

they can co-exist and it isn't a bad thing

there's a few knuckle-draggers here (general "here") who want to make it out like one or the other is terrible and should die, presumably for personal reasons

i doubt anyone else really gives a shit what's what as long as it interests them and looks active

no, but we have had more than a few fatties who have never known the sweet caress of a blade of grass who bitch about private games for no other reason than that it's against the rules to fish for wank about them

no, but there are some anons who get weirdly defensive any time anyone suggests public games are still popular, as if that somehow invalidates the existence of private games
