this was like...a space game...? I know that there was drama over osomatsu characters. I'm racking my brain but it wasn't El nysa I just remember the fallout of that application round where they changed the rule.

i only saw this play out on the sidelines, so an anon who was actually in the game at the time could give a better explanation, but essentially, thisavrou got bigger than it was intended to be and the mods were unhappy that the tone of the game wasn't what they expected. they thought the solution was to make any sort of killing intent, even if it was only a fleeting thought that the character didn't act on, punishable

idk reading this it looks like the mods asking for players to please keep their low-functioning sociopath characters from randomly killing people, trying to enforce this by making murder an icly punishable offense, and a bunch of exceptional individuals going "ummmmmm could we go over what 'intent to kill' means" for a hundred and fifty comments

if the idea was just to stop murders from happening, they should've made the rule "your character will be dropped from the game for murdering another" instead of making it about intent

as someone who was there, it wasn't about the hard line rule about banning ic murder. what blew up was the doubling down on all the weird rules that went into it that made antagonistic cr difficult. if they didn't want to allow ic murder anymore, they should have just said that, full stop.

I have no idea, apparently better than it did. it was shocking at the time because the game was doing really well and was very popular and people were engaging and enabling their friends...but the mods decided they wanted DIFFERENT characters?

Yeah it's probably one of the strangest game closures I've ever witnessed because it was entirely self-inflicted. Nobody asked to remove the underaged characters (partially because that includes the players already in the game of course, but I never saw anyone complaining about the teenager characters before the wank) and nobody demanded for the game to be shut down, just two totally bewildering decisions.

i remember the teen characters in game doing pretty well? like what I remember was the game actively tagged around without any real divide inside so it was even more bizarre to suddenly have the caps thrown on over a completely manufactured issue yeah.

As someone who was vaguely involved, the impression I personally got was that the teenager restriction was a thinly veiled "no more homestucks/voltrons/anime teens" restriction. I just straight up don't think the mod team was thrilled with the canons that were becoming popular in game but didn't want to say so outright.

It's a shame because most of the players affected were really fun and enthusiastic. As someone who played an adult from a canon that was more likely in the mods' wheelhouse, I wouldn't have wanted to stay anyway if those players felt pressured out.

Yeah it's hard to shake the feeling that it was medium divide wank in disguise, which is why even in the contemporary wankgate posts linked anons are making jokes about the Yuri On Ice boys getting away scott free.

It makes the mods seem even dumber for not implementing an age limit though because Voltron/Dangan Ronpa/etc. were all popular canons at the time and they were going to show up in any game that allowed them.

AFAIK El nysa was one of the games that just gradually ground to a halt as people lost interest. it ran for a solid chunk of time before that tho.
