According to Adam in "Welcome to Heaven", he states that he was the one that gave her the name. However, it was pronounced (/væɡiː/), named after "the best thing ever", the vagina, which is also a joke nickname that Angel Dust sometimes calls her by.

exactly this. it's a marketing scheme that was deployed successfully, and just like ThE MEtAVeRsE and nfts, a lot of clueless people said "oh boy the future is now/we're going to make so much money"

but while some companies may make an attempt, AI won't meaningfully cut into creative work for long because 1) the output is bad, and in a way it's intended to be bad, 2) public opinion's going to get over the novelty and turn against it, and 3) you can't circumvent possible lawsuits stemming from it unless you can prove you only pulled from your own proprietary table, which would...require hiring and paying creatives to do more work than they would have if you hadn't bothered with ai

so yeah it's another case of guys with money rolling in stupid idea dogshit and running down the street hollering about how it's totally miracle mud

this is getting pretty off topic but I have some reassuring anecdata that says when big companies are hiring AI people with no actual skills or training in art/illustration/animation/design, they end up fired pretty fast because AI isn't really good at taking feedback.

what I mean is, the "AIrtist" produces some images for an art director or client, and they say wow this is great but could you make her look happier? could you make our logo bigger? could you fix that tree in the background with a shadow that looks like a dick? etc. and the "AIrtist" has to go back to the AI tool which just churns out a totally different new image rather than a corrected version.

in addition, art jobs require a bunch of other skills that aren't output: working to deadline and taking criticism are two big ones that most degrees try to teach.

as far as I'm aware as someone whose life partner works for a well known company, AI is being utilised effectively as a drafting tool for stuff like backgrounds or anatomy by people who know how to see what's "wrong" and fix it. ai also churns out a lot of mediocre content that is good for narrowing down what a client wants without wasting everyone's time drawing a lot of stuff that will never be used. but both of those use cases still require real trained and skilled humans to do work, and it's only taken a couple of months for the industry to realise that.

I would say the people most likely to get something out of AI are non-professional non-artists who just want to slap some images on their thing without paying anyone - $1 ebook covers, spotify playlist graphics, rpers of all types.

we had this wank last post, there is no difference between reading material for middle schoolers and reading material for adults. if you think there is you're either an elitist or a censor.

the ones that look good are because they're ripping off an artist's style wholesale, anon

and yeah when you look closer a lot end up with crazy features like hands melding together or three hands or eight billion fingers

the really good looking stuff needs a trained eye to notice the background bleeding or not linking up correctly or weird lights suspended from nowhere and incomprehensible clothes that change colour oddly or morph into something else as they go along

(Anonymous) 2024-05-23 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
so it's your fault we got a new post

genuinely though, who gives a fuck what age a book is "supposed" to be for. if you enjoy reading it, then it's appropriate for you, end of story.

they might need to genuinely see a doctor about this

this. ai is good for churning out concepts that actual artists can then refine or use as a basis, but it's really not any good at producing finished art unless all you're looking for is, like you said, $1 ebook covers level of quality.

i have several friends who have done work for wotc illustrating magic cards. their names came up on the leaked list of artists used to train the AI. honestly, the friend i’m closest to doesn’t even want to discuss AI for very long because it makes him genuinely anxious about the future of his own employment. many are actively trying to get out of fantasy illustration and into fields where they believe it will be harder for them to be displaced by AI (there are other reasons for this, but this is still a reason)

so, yes, it does affect artists of all levels, as well as the aforementioned environmental impact

tbf fantasy illustration in particular has basically never been a good job, unfortunately

even before this AI kerfluffle wotc was paying bargain-basement prices for genuinely incredible work, and they were considered one of the better employers for that stuff

the holy grail for a fantasy illustrator is being a long-term house designer for a major studio (of any kind), but those jobs are unicorns compared to the number of skilled illustrators looking for work

already complaining about it because of the lag being bad and constantly shutting down

(Anonymous) 2024-05-23 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
i just started it last night and so far, my main complaints are not lining up the right dialogue (i picked the female rover and they've referred to her as 'he' a few times). the dialogue cutting off quickly before it plays out properly so i miss things. the english dialogue not sounding right and making me wonder if it's ai (the pronunciation of things sound off in a way that doesn't make sense - replacing ts with ds). server slow downs and things just glitching in general.

it also does feel a bit rushed, because i don't feel like i was really explained the echo process properly or what works with who or if anything's worth leveling. there's not a lot of actual explanation to equip things or what they do or why you have creatures that can do things but you can't actually do any of the things they do unless you equip one in one place and does that count for the theme run. the healing factor also seems sketchy.

it's a bit confusing. i'm auto-equipping most things because i just don't have the knowledge to specialize it. i'm running off genshin/hsr mechanics since that's what i'm familiar with. not to mention the buttons aren't instinctively responsive and it's just weird af to navigate. the d pad is mixed up between changing chars and one button accesses an alternative menu that i keep hitting in the middle of the fight because we get 3 chars, not 4, and that messes everything up.

I have ARFID, ice cream is sometimes the only thing I eat in a day, and I actually cannot stand up without risking passing out so ayrt is correct-though one doesn't cause the other in my case it definitely ain't helping. Never plurked about it so I know this isn't referring to me but I can back up that it is definitely not a great time when the only thing you can force yourself to eat is ice cream! Both nutritionally and economically, it blows.

Re: PLURK PET PEEVES

(Anonymous) 2024-05-23 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Another ARFID person here, with a few other things that leads to me... hurling up what I consume on a regular basis. Sometimes the only thing I get to eat in a day are cookies plus crackers and cream cheese or crackers and pate. Because literally anything else comes back up. It's not what I want to eat. I want to eat food food, but I'm getting really, really tired of throwing up 2, 3, 4+ times a day every day if I try to eat actual food.

I have an appointment with gastroenterology soon, for any anon who is concerned. But it's a telephone appointment so I'm not expecting much to come from it.

+1 i find this especially true for artists who specialize in backgrounds because they're commonly treated as the expendable ones since there's little to no characters in their art.

a few professional artists i know, some who have worked on big comic titles, have struggled for a while with people stealing their art to sell unofficial merch. So AI is yet another platform people steal from them.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-23 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
the pronoun thing is because he/she in chinese is gender neutral. you can clarify it in text by changing the radical to the character for women for “she”, but he/she/it is pronounced the exact same way with no differences.

it’s also why my parents have struggled with calling people proper pronouns their whole lives since for them, he/she is interchangeable and means the same thing.

there's also a good chunk of fans/viewers who decide they prefer to like the show more than their own values. i know how that sounds, but i know a few trans friends who are aware of vivziepop being transphobic, waffled about it for a hot second, then decided to keep hyperfixating on this show regardless

i cant say if it's any good or not, i personally have made the choice to not bother with it especially after learning about the creator's transphobia, but it does seem weird to me that they'll poopoo on jkr but decide it's okay to enjoy this instead. i suppose maybe because as successful as hazbin/helluva has been, it's nowhere near the level of harry potter therefore not as influential?
