i can't believe you're going to dismantle op's sense of unearned superiority over not saying the bad words like this?

+ also want to add that some of y'all are playing from translations of an original language you don't understand, where curse words don't exactly transfer 1:1. the characters are using powerful and sometimes shocking language all the same, which is why the exact same words and phrases can be translated as swears or not depending on the circumstances

for example: "chikusho" could be damn, fuck, or shucks!

"omae" literally means "you" and can be translated as such, but it can also be more liberally translated as "you motherfucking piece of shit bastard."

and so on.

there's a character i know of who speaks tersely but not with a lot of swearing in the original language of the canon (japanese) and who speaks rudely but again without a lot of swearing in the official translation but who in fan translations swears all the time.

of course a lot of people go with the fan translations, which annoys the hell out of me.

the thing with japanese is that it doesn't really have "swearing" the same way that english does in the sense that it doesn't have specific words (outside of a very few) that are considered to be particularly rude or vulgar or otherwise equivalent to cursing. the rudeness is expressed in particular verb forms/pronoun choices/sentence structure/etc.

like, i play a character who frequently uses the "-yagaru" verb form, which isn't a swear word in and of itself but is the functional equivalent of dropping a "damn/shitty/fucking" in terms of rudeness. so yeah, when i translate his speech into english i do in fact have him pepper it with swearing because that's the effect that his japanese speech pattern gives off in the original language even if it doesn't include specific "swear" words.

I’m not a fan of overly liberal translations. They always mess with the character’s vibe. That said, the much worse approach I've seen to this is RP is when roleplayers write out the Japanese words in Japanese instead of just writing "fuck" or whatever. It looks ridiculous.

but they're referring to controversy that sprung up in response to the localization changing anna's romantic relationship with the protagonist to a platonic one

they did do quite a number of changes, but you'll only notice with specific characters. in english louis does general people watching, but in japanese he specifically watches women interact. they removed any mentions of boobs, they also made a bunch of s-supports platonic. with anna and jean i get it, but with characters like rosado it was weird. especially since the wake-up dialogue was left the same and it still sounds romantic af
