game security > game maintenance > game meta > game fun
I think their priorities are actually in order, here. Particularly since it's known the one running the last two has been absolutely slammed with RL issues and thus not around to make those last two topic bits happen in a timely manner. But that they're now going forward.
except this is not a valid game security issue when anyone with enough of a stick up their ass to wank about a username could just look at the members list, and every single other smut game has usernames on the taken list. it's certainly not enough of a security issue to be prioritized over all other things, it's not as if the player contact post was unlocked or anything like that. players have 100% control over their usernames and what is posted in their journals, it's not a mod problem.
honestly? i like to know by looking at the taken list what sort of cast i might be getting into. i shouldn't have to hunt and peck through the usernames on the community to know who's playing who. maybe i don't have a problem with any potential castmate. maybe i only have a problem with one who's not really anyone i have to worry about tagging and we can come to an amenable 'no tag each other' agreement. maybe my char's bff or their s/o is played by someone i just don't get along with. that's something that i can, in any other game, find out just by going down the taken list. that's what the damn taken lists are for. taking away the basic convenience of it because someone cried about how someone might not want to play with them because they're a fucking asshole is not how you mod. usernames are on taken lists for a reason, and while i agree that they shouldn't prioritize anons and potential game players over in game players, they might actually want to take a look at the changes they're making and see if they're reasonable and make sense beyond 'a player asked for it'.
The point being if you really have a problem with certain players you know their usernames already and can easily search for them in the profile. You're whining about convenience over trying to avoid people you don't like and people in game (whoever complained) just want privacy. Ctrl + f the people you don't like, anon and get over yourself. I don't agree with what the mods did but jfc you can effort if it's that important to you. Chances are if you are trying to avoid them you know their username so look for it instead of being a tittybaby just like the asshole who asked for them to be removed in the first place.
sorry, but it's not always about enemies for life. maybe i just think someone's shit at playing that version, but i've only seen them on memes and i don't have their username completely memorized. or it's something similar to someone i like/don't like and i mix them up. there are more reasons than 'trying to avoid wankers' to tag someone.
and a lot of people seem to want to have potential close castmates tag them, so i'm sorry, but if i don't know who's playing my char's s/o or bff because i haven't played with them before, i really don't want to have to click through potentially all the chars on the comm to find the castmate/s i'm looking for. think outside your ass for a minute, jfc.
on that same note, what if someone wants to app in my close castmate or s/o? what if they want to get a hold of me to talk about it but, oops, guess they can't because my fucking username isn't in a convenient place and i don't have my char's name as my username. i'm not going to cry and whine about it, but i've seen plenty of people bitch about how 'this person apped in my s/o and didn't even bother to talk to me about it first. god i hate them'. or people being bullied out for playing a castmate that someone didn't want. those things can easily be avoided by being able to contact someone in advance. which is made harder by the lack of usernames.
but hey, let's make MORE work for the mods that are barely able to handle what they have by having potential castmates pm them to get them to play telephone and pm the castmates to tag them back. that sounds great.
or you could just take the risk, post to the tdm or app anyway? i get what the issue is but asking them to change it back now is just more unnecessary work that detracts from them focusing on the plot. i want usernames on the taken list too, anon, but i would rather the mods do something productive to the game instead.
i can understand that you're trying to offer solutions, but as someone that's had castmates and s/os contact them and be turned off from apping because of my preferences for ships, i would really hate to have someone app in and be happy to play with me, only to find out that i don't ship what they ship and they just 'wasted their time'. this has happened more than once and it's been diverted more than once just by them getting a hold of me first. and your suggestion, nice as it is, only helps if i happen to be on the tdm or if they post to it. and that isn't always the case. usernames are just a standard part of the tdm and since it took them over a week to fix the taken list in the first place, finding one that's actually user friendly to both in game players and potential players would be something i wouldn't mind at least one of them taking the time to do.
there's 3 mods now. apparently everyone's got their shit together. going through and finding a taken list code that offers what the game needs isn't going to take a week. it's something that can be done in less than 3 hours. out of all the things they're lagging on, i'd be willing for them to take an extra 3 hours to make the taken list usable. that's all.
So this is actually about your shipping preferences. Makes sense given the chain of comments.
Posting to a tdm will eliminate your issue at cost of slight inconvenience. Any close canon CR is going to see you, respond to you, and boom, there's the PM chance you wanted. Because who actually avoids potential close cr in a game structure environment anyway, save for those few who have dynamic shipping issues that go against grain.
And since tdms run like clockwork, you can schedule accordingly and even strike up potential CR to use later with other players/potential players. Win/win.
it's not? it was just an example. i don't always have time for tdms, so i personally won't always be on them looking for castmates. just like i don't know all the castmates that might potentially app. and it was one reasonable example as to why usernames should be made available.
but since you seem to be so pro-no names, i'm guessing you're one of the people that whined about it, so nice trying to deflect this and make it about something it's not.
Nope, not one of those people. I've been reading this and trying to see your or other anon's side of it, but even at its worst this seems little more than a very minor inconvenience.
People I don't want to deal with, I've talked to and told as much without mods needed. And if a situation goes far, like them actually sucking at who they play, I either move out or crit them and see if they approve, and take it to mods if they don't. So, sorry. My sympathy only goes so far in this case.
good for you. but there are more people that are not entirely okay with this than there are people that are. your experience =/= every one else's, and there are plenty of cases that have happened along the lines of what's been presented here as examples.
i don't really care if you see it. you are not harmed by usernames being made available. if you don't give a shit, that's your deal, but for potential players and even players in game who aren't canon familiar, it's just easier to find a username on the taken list than to try to hunt it down. you're advocating for it being needlessly complicated.
because some people prioritize and you know what? maybe it's not about time. maybe it's about effort. why the fuck would i want to play something out that i'm going to have to replay if/when i get in? or if/when they get in? the world does not revolve around tdms. it's not reserve sniping if you don't play on the tdm and get your reserve in before the 1-6 other versions of that char that played on it. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PLAY ON THE TDM.
it might surprise you, but a lot of people don't like tdms. it's not about fucking time, you numbskull. it's about effort.
anon, i'm pretty sure they meant that they - a player already in the game - don't always tag TDMs even if there are castmates there, thus it isn't a reliable way for new players to find out who their castmates are. posting to a TDM doesn't guarantee your in-game castmates will tag you there.
fucking christ they just have to check the reserves to know their ~super close castmate~ is app'ing in and is potentially on the tdm. why is this so hard?
I'm so confused right now.
Don't even fucking tell me they probably didn't put in a reserve because they did if their s/o or bff is in game.
but just don't want to fuck around a test drive meme?
i'm comfortable with the character i'm playing, i like the premise of the game, why the fuck do i need to go into a test drive meme if i already know what the fuck i'm doing?
Any close canon CR is going to see you, respond to you, and boom, there's the PM chance you wanted
Not true. Some in-game players don't have time for TDMs, or just don't like posting to them. You can't count on all your in-game castmates coming out of the woodwork just for a meme.
No. I don't like TDMs. I never have. Unless it's mandatory to join a game, I don't see the point in playing in it. If I like the game's concept/premise, that's what I'm joining for. So I can't expect every player or castmate to crawl out of the woodwork just to make a comment to my post, just like I won't be checking to look for potential castmates. TDMs are not mandatory. They're not necessary. They're good for people that like them, but all this bitching lately about how people should have to play on them or people should always check them is just turning me off them even more. I'm sorry, but I have actual game tags to attend to.
Exactly. And honestly, in that situation, would you WANT someone who doesn't want to play with you to app your character's BFF? If someone doesn't want to play with me I'd rather they see my username and decide not to app into the cast than app in and end up with a situation that's awkward for both of us.
Besides, the only way anyone can wank on you simply based on your username is: 1. If you're notorious enough that people would know you as "THAT ___" by your username, in which case your username is likely widely known and anyone concerned can just look at your account and see what communities it's a member of. 2. You're in two games with the same journal, in which case anyone who doesn't want to play with, say, "the ___ from CDC" can just look at CDC's taken list, find the username of that character, and see what comms they're a member of. 3. You have a dedicated grudgewanker who would again likely know your username or places you've played at previously to find your username and check what comms you're in.
All three of these problems can be solved by creating a new journal, and none of them can be solved by removing usernames from the taken list. You cannot hide the members list, so taking usernames off of the taken list offers you no privacy whatsoever. The only way to get true privacy is to create a new journal for the game or use one you've never used before. Hiding names on the taken list just makes it more difficult for people who have legitimate concerns. Wanting to know who plays who isn't always a matter of wanting to wank on them, sometimes there are just people I haven't enjoyed being castmates with in the past and if they play someone really important to my character it's not simply an issue of not tagging them. I'd rather not waste my time and the mods' time apping only to drop right away because my closest castmate is someone I knew I don't like to play with.
To be honest, I don't even see the purpose of hiding player names just because it's a smut game: DWRP as a whole just isn't as prudish as LJRP back when Amat first opened, being in a smut game is no longer some scandalous thing that will get you wanked on for that alone. You're likely going to get wanked on for the same things you would at any other game and I don't really see the need to coddle the playerbase. But, hiding player names has been a staple of smut games forever so I don't expect that to change, but hiding usernames is ridiculous.
