sa, to be clear: counting snowstorms, including nor'easters and blizzards, as natural disasters on the same level as tornadoes/wildfires/earthquakes would be the silliest false equivalency of all time

are hurricanes not natural disasters either

(frozen comment) Re: PLURK PET PEEVES

(Anonymous) 2023-03-14 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
not the ones that get up to snow territory, no

source: have lived there my entire life, by the time a hurricane gets here it's a rainstorm with a name

did you spend 2012 in a coma

i don't remember what happened in 2012, which supports my point, because it did not affect me at all

if your point is that you are in no position to talk because you have never experienced a hurricane, despite sandy having happened? yeah, that point has been solidly made.

oh yeah sandy! that was bad for manhattan for a few days. if you're looking to avoid floods, i'd avoid manhattan.

fortunately this leaves the entire rest of the northeast, upper midwest, and non-coastal midatlantic

anon are you high sandy blasted the entire eastern seaboard??? it was one of the most destructive storms on record??? whatever weird point you’re trying to make isn’t supported by this????

(frozen comment) Re: PLURK PET PEEVES

(Anonymous) 2023-03-14 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
da but i live on the east coast (not directly on the coast) and sandy really was just a big storm where i was. people lost power for a while and trees came down and there was some flooding in the really low-lying areas but it wasn't hugely destructive at all here, so they're probably telling the truth that it wasn't a big deal for them.

dda

I get what you and other anons are saying, but the frequency of massive superstorms, even with climate change, is not so high that you could say, "don't move to the northeast because of all the hurricanes". I spent most of my life in the northeast, and we have the infrastructure in place to deal with most large snowstorms, and the occasional freak storm is such a rare event everyone remembers "that one bad year".

I don't think ayrt meant that it wasn't a disaster that affected people, just that you wouldn't deliberately not move to those places to avoid those storms in the same way that you wouldn't move to Tornado Alley because of the very high frequency of tornados or avoiding Florida to avoid the high likelihood of hurricanes.

you are so clearly not from the Eastern Seaboard it's not even funny.

and also you presumably weren't checking the news back in 2012, since I'm sure people who saw that photo of an entire roller coaster getting swept out into the Atlantic from Jersey were like "this is normal"

you gotta love when someone in a community that regularly flips out over fictional characters kissing wrong says something like "natural disasters are not a big deal and also totally easy to work around"
