that psa plurk going around just makes me want to shake the owners too lazy to clean their cats litter boxes manually. it's the cheapest and safest option that guarantees cats won't be maimed or killed by the fucking guillotine litterbots. and being physically disabled is still no excuse to be irresponsible and subject pets to cheaply made, untested death traps just because it's more convenient for the owners.

god that plurk is my biggest fear when it comes to automated litter boxes and why i'll never use them. i'm a programmer in a closely related field and i KNOW how easily simple mechanisms and programming can get FUBAR. i will gladly continue scooping my cats shit myself.

and people shouldn't use enclosed litter boxes anyway but that's a different rant.

it's not even like scooping a litterbox is difficult or time-consuming. i petsit for my neighbors regularly (they have two cats) and i scoop the box out once a day when they're gone and it takes me less than five minutes to do. if you can't even spare less than five minutes a day for the proper care of your animals you have no fucking business owning pets.

lol this thread reminds me of the hysterical boomers in my life that were convinced my cat, who was born and raised indoors and has never even seen a mouse in her life, was somehow going to murder my hypothetical unborn children with her poop. i guess some people believe taxo just magically manifests in cat poop no matter what.

+2, ayrt has no idea what rodents are about, especially in an apartment building. you can be the cleanest person, and rats and mice will still travel for shelter, food or nesting resources if there's an infestation nearby, or if you have unattended holes in your walls or by your pipelines. yes, they'll thrive in a household with everyone's shit on the floor, but you're kidding yourself if you think you're safe from mice in perpetuity, especially if you don't live in a newly built home. there are many reasons to pick on dwrpers, but suffering through a rodent infestation ain't it.

like we didn't consider that it might be a disability accessibility thing maybe

maybe people with joint issues in our aging demographic might find the idea of not manually kneeling down with a scoop and sifting through cat shit to be not comfortable anymore

the first thing i thought of reading this is why get a cat then? why not, assuming you have the money and time to take care of them and just can't kneel down to scoop that poop, get a pet that could fit your lifestyle better?

that said i don't think wanting more convenience is an issue, automatic feeders are a thing for busy people who might be out for more than a day and has helped people i know, but i just don't see the reason to defend a badly designed cleaner that can potentially be a deathtrap.

one reason why people get automatic litter robots is to try to eliminate the odor. it may not even be for them but someone they live with because there are people who absolutely think that living with cats is unhygienic because of a litter box, and it’s much cheaper to splurge on a robotic litter box over finding a new place to live.

tbh a lot of them don’t work very well at that either imo but i think it’s dumb to just chalk it up to pure laziness and indicating that people deserve to have their pets crushed to death due to that.
