it's so hard to tell what's an action and what's spoken because the tags are just like this [ and then suddenly action ] and suddenly we're talking again

if people don't want to smalltext their brackets because they struggle with reading small text, i completely understand that

but if they did something like italicize the action or bold the outside brackets it would make their tags sooooo much easier to read. i really do think that style is better suited for those who are used to it instead of the majority of rpers in non-ecats games who don't

and i knew people who italicized their brackets as well and even then i’ve seen people get dragged on here for doing that as well even outside ecat games

most people who don’t smalltext were likely people who have been rping in journal rp for a long, long time so

if this particular person you are rping style is bugging you and it’s making threading with them difficult then why not just ask them about it/inform that your difficulty in comprehending their tags

hate to break it to you but sometimes threads don't need four paragraphs of exposition and a sentence or two to get the general mood across is fine

this tbh

a lot of it comes off as frankly kinda masturbatory to me, especially in the case of over-formatted starters. truly i do not need to know your character's anguished internal monologue in every tag; haven't any of you fucks heard of "show, don't tell." some of the players whose writing i've admired most have been those who could fit a lot of impact and hooks for further engagement in just a few sentences. it's a skill i personally want to cultivate more!

also, sidebar but i have found that i really enjoy the more immersive dynamic i get from inner monologue stuff NOT being included (unless a character is specifically very easy to "read" emotionally/the other character is especially ICly good at those reads), because it means that organic disagreements and misunderstandings can happen between characters, which imo makes for more exciting, nuanced CR. people can and do treat metatext as a cheat sheet in threads, and even if you don't mean to, it's genuinely very hard to not let that "spoiler" shade your character's response.

fyi "show don't tell" refers to shit like describing body language and facial expressions to indicate how a character is feeling instead of just putting "I'm angry" in a single line of dialogue

it doesn't refer to the concept of brevity, which is an entirely different skill

all you have to do is be aware that your character can't read the metatext and write your response accordingly

you can like reading and still think there's a time and place for shorter tags.

frankly, if our characters are having ice cream and talking about their pets, i'm really not interested in reading three paragraphs of meta text about how your character's cat ran away when they were a child and how it traumatized them for life and they still wonder what happened to fluffy because it's irrelevant to the subject at hand. my character can't see or hear any of that. they can't respond to it. it contributes exactly nothing to what is otherwise a lighthearted smalltalk thread.
